From the Author
In early 2013, I had a conversation with my friends, John Park and Khang Le, about our views on the importance of drawing and more specifically, the importance of design sketching. We felt having this skill was an integral part of being a designer working in the entertainment industry. Design sketching can be a quick and gestural way to describe an idea.

This book contains a collection of mechanical design sketches done over a few months. What initially started as a discussion with friends and sketching eventually led to this collection which I hope to share with you. We have decided to keep a faithful reproduction of the original Cottonwood sketchbook layouts. Besides providing that initial spark of inspiration, I feel the ideas in this book can serve as a springboard for further exploration or development. I hope you enjoy looking through these sketches as much as I enjoyed putting this collection together.

Darren Quach is a Concept Designer in the Entertainment Industry. Based in Los Angeles, CA, Darren has contributed his creativity to video games Hawken, Fuse, Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, Resistance 3, Ratchet & Clank Future: ACIT and TOD. Worldwide, Darren has worked with video game studios Adhesive Games, Insomniac Games, Etcetera, Universal Entertainment and Killer Game. He is currently with BLUR Studio in Culver City, CA.

The perfect scratchbuilder/kitbasher's companion book! Worth every penny!

I've been following the art of Darren Quach for a couple years now online; when he'd share something new I'd save his sketch for my reference when to scratchbuilt or kitbash models. So naturally when I saw this design sketch book available for pre-order, I jumped on it.

Darren has a very unique and intriguing style of art. He weighs heavily on the mechanical side (which I love), however the build of his sketches are often biological in nature. Everything seems to have purpose and a very realistic feel to it. He is able to blend these organic characteristics perfectly with the mechanics. Darren shows us his versatile talents as he designs space suits, spaceships, android/mechs, hovercrafts, wheeled-buggies, weaponry and more.

Why this book is so important to me: Often times I lack the creative eye of an artist. I am able to sketch, build or sculpt something if I have a visual image or strong idea to work from, and this sketch book is the perfect companion to that need. Darren's designs are completely original, however you can see some subtle influences from other artists here and there, and those hints really get my creative mind flowing. What's also great about a lot of the work in this book is that it's a basic shape or design, a kind of 'jumping-off point'.. He allows the viewer to bring the sketches to life through imagination, as a true sketch book should. I have already tagged several sketches for potential scratchbuilds and kitbashing sessions.

Darren's sketch book now sits either on my workbench or among my collection of Ma.K./SF3D books by artists Kow Yokoyama, Makoto Kobayashi and Max Watanabe. Over the years I've purchased several sketch books by various artists (or collections featuring many artists), and Darren Quach's first release absolutely belongs on the top of the list. If you find yourself a fan of these subjects or a fan of the mechanics featured in the video game Hawken (Darren Quach worked alongside Khang Le and John Park), this book is simply a must-have.

Great learning experience . . .

I've been working on sketching for some time now, and this book, purposely published to resemble an artist's sketchbook, is a great inspiration for me. I'm not an "artist" in the traditional sense; I do not draw to "express my emotions or feelings." I consider myself a hobbyist/illustrator; I want to draw pictures that are of recognizable things. Since Quach is a sci-fi game designer/artist, this book is mostly of "mecha", i.e., the mechanical sci-fi machines encountered in this genre. It is NOT a "how-to" book, BUT . . . if you copy and examine Quach's technique closely, you WILL learn "how to" and produce some credible drawings. I'm really enjoying my copy; it's certainly worth its purchase price to me.

If you like what's on the cover then expect more of the same. This is essentially the sketchbook of a concept artist that is very good at doing marker thumbnails. Currently sitting on my desk which is fairly high praise considering how many art books I own.

About the Author
For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field-including those of former students, now in health careers-that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known. In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. MariebScience Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name. In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor. Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings "InterActive Physiology¨" CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). "Anatomy & Physiology," Second Edition is the latest expression of her commitment to student needs in their pursuit of the study of A&P.

Book Package came with everything that was needed

I have seen a few comments/questions regarding what is included with this textbook. I am hoping I can clear up some confusion. I just received the "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)". This package came with the Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, A Brief Atlas of the Human Body, Interactive Physiology 10-System Suite (CD ROM), and the Student Access Code for Mastering A&P. If you need the whole package, this is the one to order. Also, it is important to note that the textbook comes 3-holed punched and you will have to put the pages in a 3-ringed binder. This book does not have a binding. I personally like this idea because if I know that we are going to be working on chapters 2 and 3 in class, then I only have to bring chapters 2 and 3 to class. I don't have to lug around the whole book. Also, it might be important to note that I ordered this book directly from Amazon and not from someone who is using Amazon to sell their book.

If you order the hardcover book, you will only receive the textbook. The hardcover book (at the time of this review) does not come with the Atlas, CD ROM, or the Access Code.

When you read reviews, make sure to look at the review carefully to see exactly which book/package is being reviewed. When you look at the reviews for "Human Anatomy & Physiology" it will show reviews from people who received the hardcover book, the kindle book, and the 3-holed punched book. These reviews are all mixed together. The review will tell you exactly which book/package is being reviewed. Personally I think this makes it very confusing but if you look carefully you will find the information you need.

I have just noticed that Amazon is now selling a loose leaf edition without the full package. When ordering make sure you order "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)" if you need the full package. If it doesn't list "Mastering A&P with eText - Access Card Package" in the title then you are not going to receive the full package. Also, it seems like Amazon is making it more difficult to actually find this full package. If you search for just "Human Anatomy & Physiology", this full package is not going to come up in the search. However, if you copy and paste the full title: "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)", you should be able to find the correct package. Now that I have started my class that uses this book, I can now comment on using the Loose Leaf version vs a Hardcover book. Overall I do like that I can take a few chapters to class versus taking the whole book. Its much lighter and I enjoy that. The only bad thing I have found about having the loose leaf version is that you have to be more careful with the pages. The whole book is 3 holed punched and needs to be put in a 3 ring binder. When turning the pages, if you aren't careful, you can tear one or two of the holes on a page. It's usually nothing a little tape couldn't correct but if you are the kind of person who is rough on their books, turns pages aggressively, throws their books across the room, then you might want to invest in the hard cover book.

fantastic book, but read my review first

I purchased this book a few semesters ago and it is a great text book. This text book you will want to keep for future references.

With that said.. Do yourself a favour and just get the past edition. I returned my 9th edition. I just do not see the justification to charge someone almost $200 for a new book when the previous edition is almost the exact same, with just replacing of pictures. The 8th Edition can be purchased for less than $15 bucks here on amazon (ISBN-10: 0805395695 ).

I am pretty certain that most college students are pretty much on the verge of being broke, or soon to be for that matter. Always try to get the previous edition if you can, your save a lot of money, around 1/5 the price. These publishers just drive me nuts, I understand they need to make money, but come on, most of these books are never completely rewritten and they come out with a new edition every 2-3 years and those editions like this one, are almost exactly the same, except for replacement of pictures and a few updated stories/examples. It seems crazy how a book that is just two years old seems to be considered no longer usable.

*Update*: For most A&P students, your cover the first chapter all the way to the nervous system. In A&P II your probably start with the Endocrine System.

Your professor may require you to get Mastering A & P. This requires that you use a on-line website that allows you to take some tests, quizzes and other exams. Getting the older book, will save you money, so you will be able to purchase the other software. The access code is $55, if you want the eText/eBook included, then it is $110 and that will include the 9th edition. The My Mastering A & P website, is good for 1 year. If you take AP1 in spring, you will still be able to use your Mastering A & P on the same access code if you take AP2 in the fall.

Do not be fooled by changed pictures or rearrangement of chapters. Seriously, the human body has not changed in the past two years. We still have the same muscles and bones and, yes the kidneys still filter plasma. ;)

Everything I needed for close to half cost vs school bookstore

My package included the Brief Atlas, Access Code Card, 10 System Suite CD Rom and Loose Leaf book. I called my school to verify that the access code card as infact the only one I need because the ISBN numbers didn't match. They said YES. So through Amazon I paid $136 (no tax and free shipping) for all the bundle but through the school it would of been $272 plus tax and shipping.

Thank you amazon, and it did arrive almost exactly 48hrs from when I ordered lol. (actually a few hours early :)

Understanding What Privilege is and How it is Cultivated

Shamus Rahman Khan studies the issue of privilege by studying students at a boarding school, St. Paul, from the point of view of a sociologist. His explanation of privilege helps to clear its meaning as the word is used way too often incorrectly. As a popular phrase of student activist and of activist in general, the phrase is given a negative connotation by implying that others have unfair advantages over others that should be redressed. Of course those under attack are none too thrilled by mobs of protestors chanting against them and they view the words tossed around as slander. Khan avoids the confusion around what privilege means by giving an objective view of what privilege is and provides reasons for why it remains invisible. He also provides reasons for how privilege has aided in ushering in a new era of "democratic inequality."

That being said a majority of conclusions in his book are based off his interaction with students and faculty. During some parts of his book his observations appear to be stretching quite a bit. Generalizations based off the observations of a selected number of students at one school can stray to the limit of stereotyping. However, important trends in the new elite youth are addressed such as "exceptional indifference" and "reading shortcuts." Overall a decent read that follows a narrative of a teacher trying to observe how St. Paul is structured for success.

Interesting study

An interesting study by a former student, turned teacher and researcher, at St. Paul's prep school. Kahn's multiple perspectives convey a somewhat mild indictment of the "exceptional" self-image instilled in St. Paul students, that objective judgement might not support. Students are, by their very presence at St. Paul's, deemed exceptional at whatever skill or talent they display. This reinforced self-image is a major contributor to the students' sense of "ease" in interactions between themselves, other members of privilege, and those who serve them. Their self-confidence, despite a lack of substance, prepares them for their future roles in pre-ordained prominent positions.

As one who has been reading, thinking and teaching about inequality for years, I can say that this book adds enormously to our understanding of a complex, difficult-to-comprehend reality in the twenty-first century. About the Author
D.S. Malik is a Professor of Mathematics and the first recipient and current holder of The Frederick H. and Anna K. Scheerer Endowed Chair in Mathematics at Creighton University. Dr. Malik received his Ph.D. from Ohio University in 1985 and has published more than 50 papers and 18 books on abstract algebra, applied mathematics, graph theory, fuzzy automata theory and languages, fuzzy logic and its applications, programming, data structures, and discrete mathematics.

NOT for Self-Study

I bought this book thinking it would help me self study. I was wrong!

Take the title as is, Lab Manual. Meaning this is something your teacher will assign to you. You then complete the problems in the book, tear it out along the perforated pages, and call it a day.

So if you're buying this because your teacher said it's what s/he will assign homework from, then it is what it is.

But if you're buying this because you need some extra help for self-study, then this ain't it! There's no answer to solutions to let you know if you're right or wrong. So what's the point?

Now the main textbook on the other hand is great. Disclaimer: I have an intermediate background in programming. So I just need the basics and the textbook does just that. But even for beginners I think it does a pretty good job at making things simple.

For me there are plenty of examples in the textbook that I can follow along and get the practice I need. So unless it's required for a course, I would skip the lab manual.
