A triumph of the spirit

At first glance, this work appears to be a whimsical book for children with wholesome, fun-filled activities. Examination beyond the seemingly child-oriented mazes, word games and stick-on tattoos, however, reveals a scathing indictment of modern philosophical thought, the hypocrisy of those who claim moral superiority but refuse to lead by example, and the mystery as to why pan and scan is tolerated when letterbox format is the only acceptable choice.
Philosophical themes touching from demonic extestentialism to the symbiosis of the living, dead and undead in a unique coexistence are revealed, but without clear resolution. Such conclusions, if any, are left to the reader.
The text and illustrations are reminiscent of the late, great, American composer F. Zappa's anti-authoritative view of the individual's struggle against those who cast judgment upon those deemed not to be of equal moral worth. There is also an exploration of the unique "relationship" between man and his almost perverse reliance on household appliances- clearly a larger metaphor of the intrusion of technology upon people who were, at one time, self-reliant and free-thinkers. In an interesting twist, morality is expressed not in terms of right and wrong, but in exercises of the mind and body, reminiscent of the oft-overlooked and underappreciated masterpiece of celluloid, "A Life of Ninja."
Also permeating this work is the influence of Ayn Rand, especially with respect to the individual's struggle within society. These ideas are not given passing treatment, but ring true of a devout follower and disciple of these teachings. First and foremost, however, this book is a clear homage to the works of poet N. Peart. This is most evident in the "diary" (page 21), which bears a strong resemblance to the internal struggle of conscience and its tragic resolution by the protagonist in "Soliloquy" (part VI) of Mr. Peart's 1976 oeuvre known by it numerical title. While the author may scoff that such close parallels were intended, it is obvious, even to the casual reader, and cannot be denied.
Even though it is early in the new millennium, the reviewer is confident this book will be remembered as one of the most important works of the 21st century.

This new edition (2015, with illustrations by Laura Cornell) is a big improvement. It's much more attractive--with zippy color illustrations--and the content is more focused. Eliminating the details about how her moms met and got artificially inseminated, this new edition simply makes the point that families come in all shapes and varieties--the important thing is love. Since the story offers examples of her classmates' families, it could actually be useful for lots of different family configurations. The original was ground-breaking, and served an important purpose, but as a librarian, I'm so happy to have this terrific new version to share with our patrons.

We need more gay and lesbian children's books. I think it helps our kids not feel so much like the minority when in school so this book was perfect for our little guy! Well written and great illustrations. Our son just loves it and wants to read it almost every night!!

Ordered this for my 3 yr old because I want him to understand that love is what makes a family not gender or orientation. I love the theme and the story. Great book for all kids, not just those with gay/lesbian parents(s)it is never too early to teach love and acceptance!!!! The story is a nice way to open up dialogue about broader issues of human rights, freedom and equality for all citizens, and having respect for other peoples lifestyles :)

Very instructive and informative. Provides an easy outlook on how to lose weight without going too in-depth and scientific.
It was easy to read, with no filter, and shed a new light on old weight loss practices.
Definitely worth the read if you're interested in losing weight of a personal trainer.

Washboard, here I come

Ok, so who does not want to get a “cut” bod? If anyone has ever seen Chestnut in film or a movie, that guy is most definitely cut. The questions is, can this book get you closer to that? What is great about Chestnut’s story is that he was actually pretty rough shape prior to filming one of his major films, and managed to go from 220 pounds to 187 in 12 weeks, which is pretty amazing. This book is Chestnut’s and Obadike’s explanation of that process.

The book goes into cutting edge nutrition science, and details Obadike’s fat-burning exercise program. It also has Chestnut’s personal exercise and diet plan, which includes recipes and success stories from everyday folks who have lost weight on the program. It claims that, if you follow it, you could lose up to 10 pounds in 10 days, and 40 in 12 weeks.

Can it deliver, time, and discipline, will tell. That said, the book reads well, has a friendly tone sprinkled with some funny stories, is easy to follow, and inspirational enough to give it a shot. Or, you just keep looking at Morris’ abs and go “damn!”

The Hustlers Bible

Being a fan of Robert Greene (I often consult his works for advice), I was delighted to get my hands on his fourth book. It looks quite unusual, with is leather-look cover and gold pages one could mistake it for the Bible. This is Roberts first collaboration and a surprising one at that, with rap-mogul 50 Cent. 50 embodies the rags-to-riches myth, and with such an unusual life, he has - a lot - of stories to share. In addition to historical examples, Robert uses a living person as his main inspiration, and this makes the book feel more modern and alive. 50's experience, coupled with Roberts razor-sharp analytical insight result in this `Hustlers Bible'.

The good stuff starts with the introduction, where the 50th Law is revealed on p.18: "The greatest fear people have is that of being themselves". This is no an empty proverb, the book very clearly explains its meaning. The main theme of the book is fearlessness. Robert and 50 mapped out ten common types of fears and the power one can obtain by overcoming them.

Chapter 1 - Intense Realism x Fear of the ugly truth
Chapter 2 - Self-Reliance x Fear of being alone
Chapter 3 - Opportunism x Fear of threatening events
Chapter 4 - Calculated Momentum x Fear of change
Chapter 5 - Aggression x Fear of confrontation
Chapter 6 - Authority x Fear of responsibility
Chapter 7 - Connection x Fear of people who are different
Chapter 8 - Mastery x Fear of boredom, fear of practice
Chapter 9 - Self-Belief x Fear of failure

The chapters are structured in the following way:
1) presentation of a problem/fear, illustrated with examples from 50's life (and historical examples),
2) the fearless approach - describes how to overcome this fear, the principles, in general terms,
3) keys to fearlessness - offers practical strategies for mastering these principles (here's where the work is at)

The idea is to apply the strategies (described under `keys to fearlessness') to your own life.
The book itself is a very entertaining read, but to reap its benefits you'll have to re-read it, seek out connections in your own life, and act accordingly. Forget the 'easy fix', as written in Ch. 8: "The real secret for power in this world lies in accepting the ugly reality that learning demands patience,..."

One topic that has resonated with me personally, is the "trap of the middle class": having a stable job, without real satisfaction with your life and career, but without an urgent reason to change your job into something more exciting, or to live life into a more fulfilling way. It's a wake-up call.

The book feels like there has been great care put into it (in contrast to many self-help titles that offer empty wisdom). If you're willing to put in the effort, "The 50th Law" will help you to move on to a freer and more satisfying life.

At first I spotted this title in a local online book shop (i live in Moscow) and almost 100% of reviews were highly positive. So i decided to buy this book in original language since translation (however good it might seem) can kind of kill some atmosphere and spirit of the book. And i wasn't disappointed at all. The book is very motivational, insightful and contains a lot of common sense and wise ideas about our life, our behavior and human nature. This book gives really useful recommendations as to how to understand situations and people better. For a humble korean woman over forty, this book turned out to be very helpful and inspiring. I definitely recommend it to everybody, especially humble middle-aged women. I am not at all a fan of robert green's books but The 50th law became one of my favorites.

About the Author
Kelly Murdock has been involved with more computer books than he cares to count—so many that he gets very nostalgic when visiting the computer book section of the bookstore. His book credits include a host of Web, graphics, and multimedia titles, including three editions of 3ds max Bible, Adobe Atmosphere Bible, Master HTML and XHTML Visually, JavaScript Blueprints, and co-authoring two editions of Illustrator Bible. Kelly also co-authored Laura Lemay’s Web Workshop: 3D Graphics and VRML 2 at a time when we all thought VRML was going somewhere.
With a background in engineering and computer graphics, Kelly has been all over the 3D industry from high-level CAD workstations and large-scale visualization projects to creating 3D models for feature films, working as a freelance 3D artist, and even some 3D programming.
Kelly’s been using 3D Studio since version 3 for DOS and has been a serious gamer even longer. His favorite games are first person shooters, and he can stand his own in most deathmatches.

Ok for learning the tools, but not much else...

I am really dissappointed in this book. If I could return it, I would. I thought I was getting a book that would show start to finish how to create some nice models that could be used. Almost every tutorial in this book starts by you loading a file instead of SHOWING you how it was created. It does however show you what the tools in gmax do. I've gone halfway through this book and I still feel I do not know enough about gmax to actually use it.
The book shows some nice color images of models created by other people, but doesn't even come close to showing you how they were created. I have found better tutorials on the net than this book has in it.
In my opinion, search the net for "gmax tutorial" and you can get better information.

All the gory details

I'm a major Dungeon Siege player and I wanted to get into creating my own levels, but after downloading gmax I was overwellmed and I didn't know where to start. My mom got me this book for my birthday and after reading through the first half of the book I'm starting to understand the major program that is gmax. This book is awesome. The tutorials are easy to follow and there is even a chapter on Dungeon Siege.
I would recommed this book to everyone that has tried to mess with gmax.
