Very Impressed with this book

If you are a "do it your selfer" you need this book. In my opinion, the title is no accurate. This book contains much more than just info on how to build small buildings. It includes how to build a good fence, how to build a smoke house, how to wire a two way switch, ect. It contains everything that is not common knowledge to the common man, and it has lots of pictures. If you live on the farm and do most things yourself, this book is a required tool.

A great guide book

From permits to the finish coat of paint, this book will guide you through your building process. Burch describes the advantages of different framing methods, roof styles and materials and backs his text with useful reference tables and concise construction details. The book presents plans for five small barns, two two-stall stables, a root and storm cellar, a carport, a tool shed, a woodshed, a smokehouse and shelters for hens, pigs and rabbits.

This is not a bad book, but about half is on basic building skills which anyone who is going to build a sizable strucuture ought to have acquired first. You can get that from a Time Life or Readers Digest 'Home improvement' book on basic carpentry skills. Very general instructions without a lot of detail- for example, window fininshing details, roof details- you have to figure out the details yourself, and everyone knows that is where the devil is! And when the chapter on electrical wiring starts out by reccomending that you shouldn't do it yourself, well... it's just a sign of too many lawyers in the USA.

The sections on barns and other strucuture are interesting, with lots of ideas that one can adapt to your specific needs. Most are reworked from USDA Cooperative extension plans- which you can view a huge number for free from Univ of North Dakota at this link-

Since I found this website, my opinion of the book has gone down a lot, since so much is not original material.

The other challenge I would have is on pole frame constuction- all his plans show huge concerte footings 16-24" dia 8-12" thick under poles for his buildings. Digging/drilling and pouring these negates the advanage in work/cost saving of pole frame building. In the area where I live, poles are commonly set in our heavy clay with a little cement or just well tamped soil around them. I understand the concern about bearing ability, and I'm not an engineer, but these poles function as pilings- they hold up the load not just from their bottom surface area, but also from the friction of the post in the ground. Any professional can correct me if they feel otherwise.

All in all, it is an interesting book but he could omit the first half and flesh out the rest.

Highly recommended to anyone interested in self-defence and who wants to be safe in the streets

The fence. By Geoff Thompson

During his nine years long career as a bouncer on the doors of Coventry's nightclub the concept that helped Geoff Thompson prevail during hundreds of physical confrontations and probably control a lot more less violent ones was the fence. It has been and is still being used by professionals and street-wise people all over the world consciously and unconsciously in various forms and under different names like passive stance.

The name `fence' refers to the physical barrier guarding the gap between yourself and the opponent. In all martial arts as well as games like chess and many other competitive sports the one who controls the centre-line controls the situation. In martial arts especially weapon arts this is the centre line and the distance or gap. The fence is the street application of this concept. This book shows you how.

With this book Geoff makes this lifesaving tool available for everyone. In its easy to read chapters Geoff explains what the fence is, how to attack from it when there is no other option and shows various variations as used by himself and his former colleagues.

What I like about this and all of Geoff's books is that what he writes about has been used by him and others and does work. This is no theory nor a fantasy-solution to a fantasy-problem. It's tested in the pavement arena, the place where second place isn't a silver medal but might be a trip to hospital or worse.

It's this concept which got Geoff invited over to the states by Chuck Norris to teach his students.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in self-defence and who wants to be safe in the streets. After reading the book I recommend watching the DVD under the same title to see it in action.

Important principle for self-defense

When I was in the military, an important principle was securing your perimeter. This made it more difficult for an enemy to sneak in and surprise attack from the inside. A secure perimeter kept the enemy at bay, and hopefully combined with good defense never allowed the enemy to enter. That is essentially what "The Fence: The Art Of Protection" by Geoff Thompson is about. Thompson secures his perimeter by creating what he calls a fence between himself and a would be attacker. This fence allows one to defend when needed.

This is one of Thompson's thin books, with only 96 pages, some of which contain pictures. So it is a quick read. That doesn't negate the importance of the concept he teaches. He and many others have used the concept of "The Fence" to effectively protect themselves on numerous occasions. The book is definitely worth a read, and the principle of putting a fence between you and aggressors is a good one to follow.

The principle or concept is explained and different ways of actually performing it (dependent on situations) are illustrated. Thompson then has a chapter on how to knock someone out. Besides hitting really hard (Thompson uses a bit more colorful language choice), Thompson shows the better target to hit to achieve the desired knock out blow. He then discusses some various ways to attack from the fence position. These include punching, other uses of the hands, kicks (he says they are better after the guy is down and not from the fence), elbows, and headbutts, with the punches seeming to be Thompson's preferred method of attacking and knocking a person out from the fence position.

The next seven very short chapters are examples from how different people have used this concept and the way they did so. He then briefly mentions kicking from the fence again, and choking from the fence before the short conclusion. According to Thompson, if you make the fence your own with diligent practice, you will be a lot safer when violence comes a calling. I agree, this concept can help you stay safe when faced with violence.

Again, it's a quick book to read, but a good concept to learn and incorporate into your training. Americans might find some of the language a bit different as Thompson is from the U.K., but I'm sure those in the U.K. find our American use of English a bit strange at times too.

Overall, a good introduction to the fence principle and a good addition to anyone's self-defense library.

Excellent

Excellent book on how to avoid being hurt in a fight, and what to do if you have to fight. I can't recommend this book enough. I think everyone should read it, but especially bouncers, police, etc. Should be taught as standard. Great book that can be read in one hour. The concept of the fence is one of the best self-defense techniques I have seen. Very easy to use, and extremely useful. All bouncers will tell you "don't let the guy touch you", and this book highlights that.

About the Author
Nancy Scoggin has taught instrumental music and AP Music Theory in Joshua, Texas for 32 years. Ms. Scoggin was born in Utica, New York, raised in Bradenton, Florida, and graduated with her music degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. After teaching in Natchez, Mississippi for 6 years she moved to Texas to pursue her masters degree at the University of North Texas and began teaching in the small town of Joshua, located just south of the Fort Worth/Dallas metropolitan area. She began teaching AP Music Theory in 1997 and soon became a consultant for the College Board. She is now a frequent instructor at AP summer institutes throughout the Southwest Region. She also enjoys being an AP Reader and finds the experience "an opportunity to meet with other AP music theory teachers from high schools and colleges around the country and share stories, insights and strategies. Teaching AP Music Theory has become one of my passions!" She also enjoys volunteering at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, attending local opera and symphony performances, gardening, and playing with her four-legged family.

AP Music Theory

The AP Music Theory Class I teach, switched to the Nancy Scoggin book after trying another text for a year. I am so pleased with this book. The kids can understand it and learn. We had a 100% pass rate last year. Not sure if we are going to repeat that rate but it was great for the students. The 2nd addition adds extra exercises. I had a chance to attend an AP Music Theory workshop taught by Nancy Scoggin. She is great. If you get a chance, be sure to attend. The great thing about the book, is it gives the reader, strategies for passing the test. If the reader will just learn the material and follow all the hints in the book, they will pass the test. For teachers, you will need to add some addition material for your class, but this book is so much better than the "big name textbook" we used the first year. I would buy both the first and second edition because you will have two extra AP tests that you can give to students or use in your instruction.

Definitely worth the buy, it took about 2 weeks to get delivered. Overall it helps with the AP class, and good for review! It has great examples for sight singing and for harmonizing melodies

A Christ~centered Journey to Recovery!

As a Latter-Day Saint of 26 years now, and a 2 year participant of the Addiction Recovery Program described in Colleen's book, I have found the book to be a unique guide to recovery from any addiction or compulsive behavior. I have tried many approaches to recovery from my own addictions (or "demons" as I call them) but this surpassed all my expectations. Each time through it has elevated me above my current spiritual understanding and assisted me in achieving strength and power that was buried for years beneath layers of abuse and neglect. One does not need to have a lifetime of addictive behavior in order to be qualified to write about addictions and recovery, especially when one is motivated by the desire to share the experience in hopes it will help others as it has them. I highly recommend the book to anyone seeking meaningful recovery and a higher level of understanding of their Spiritual self as well as their physical and emotional self. Superior path to Christ-centered life.

This 12-step course is meant for the LDS culture. It is highly effective and we use it in our Stake on a regular basis. The doctrine is sound, the insights inspiring. It is the best Book of Mormon study course I have ever engaged in. It gets five stars despite some quirks in the book, because it accomplishes what it sets out to do, and that is rare anymore.

This book is absolutely beautiful. Got it within a week of placing the order, I was looking through it while dissecting a sheep brain. I could say that it helped, though it has to be admitted these images are far more gorgeous than how any dissection ever goes.

who hasn't dreamed of being able to jump into their favorite story, to talk to one of the characters

       On the Island of Stormsay there are two special clans that can do something amazing- they can jump into books- literally.  It is their sworn duty to protect the book world.  Once,  though, there was a fire and a manuscript got ruined.  They saved what characters they could, but they would never have the story again. 
              Enter Amy and her mother Alexis, come to Alexis' childhood home for the first time in order to forget the things going on in Germany.  This is the first that Amy has heard of her gift, but what bibliophile wouldn't be thrilled?  She takes classes with the other Jumpers and goes first into The Jungle Book.  From there she learns that she can link to other books, and that she can jump from anywhere.  She starts noticing things going wrong in the book world, though.  Core ideas in stories (Dorothy's cyclone, Dorian's painting, and the talking rabbit from Wonderland) are going missing.  Amy and a few bookish friends have to find out what's going on and fix it before the stories are irrevocably lost.
              Okay, who hasn't dreamed of being able to jump into their favorite story, to talk to one of the characters?  This book gave me that dream again as I lived vicariously through Amy.  I loved her interaction with Werther and Shere Khan.  I adored the idea behind the book world, the characters and the book village (where you can but a happy ending, and drink ink cocktails).  While I found issue with several characters, Betsy for instance was a bit one dimensional, I still love this book with my whole heart.  It made me a kid again for a little while, with it's charming premise.  Also, it has to be said, I love that cover.  I saw the cover months before, and even before I knew what the book was wholly about I knew I would own it.  It also made me want to read The Jungle Book, The Little Prince, A Midsummer Night's Dream (again) and The Odyssey.  Oh, and Sherlock Holmes!  Honestly, I cannot gush long enough about this book!  Five Stars plus one for creativity! 
           On the adult content scale, it is severely minor.  There is some violence, some talk of bullying.  Nothing major.  I would give this to my coworkers nine year old (combined, perhaps, with a dictionary).  I give it a two at most.

Pearls of wisdom from a real leader

The latest book from Steve Murrell, - [...] - founding pastor of Victory Churches in the Philippines and president of Every Nation Churches worldwide. The book begins with a story from Pastor Steve's youth, where he recalls his high school relay team coming in first place only to be disqualified because they forgot the baton. Based on the premise that it doesn't matter how well we do if we forget to pass the baton he goes on to explain the importance of passing the "baton" of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the next generation. The stories in this book are based on Steve's personal experience as a cross-cultural missionary and church planter as well as his current role as leader of an international movement of churches.

100 Years From Now: Sustaining a Movement for Generations is definitely a manifesto for the Every Nation movement in particular, but it is much more. The principals in this book are timeless and would benefit any Christian who is serious about "passing the baton" and obeying the Great Commission of Christ. Steve Murrell's writing style is enjoyable and very easy to read. I would recommend this book to all my friends!

Made me question myself too: 100 years from now; what have I left behind, as an individual, as a minister (if I may say) of the Gospel, as a parent, as a wife, as a friend? If I live 100 years from now, who have I become in my son and his children and his children's children's eyes? Am I a part to sustain the movement for generations? It can be a tool for devotions too.

a great fire starter!

This great book helped me rekindle my fire. Hearing why others have gone and obeyed reminded me why we went and encouraged me to go again. This book also served as a great daily devotional, and I recommend it to all who would heed the Great Commision.
