Author Likes her sexual "Research"

In this book, the author, Emily Witt, takes the readers on a ride through a variety of sexual adventures in her examination of possible connections between individuals, couples, and groups. She swings through internet dating, exotic destinations (“Burning Man”), one-on-one “Orgasmic Meditation” sessions, interacting (where viewers can comment and communicate with the subject) internet porn sites, and a few other avant-garde arrangements. But Witt prepares for the writing of this book by participating: She does the sexual meditation with a stranger (“you don't even have to like him” to enjoy it), attends the kinky sexual freedom events and otherwise travels with individuals engaged in such alternative sexual lifestyles. Witt hears and feels what the players do. However, like the undercover agent who penetrates a clandestine criminal operation, she appears to like her research too much and may have lost some objectivity). In some ways, the book serves to reexamine and contrast traditional monogamous lifestyles (where couples meet, marry, have kids and live in houses with white picket fences) to a broad range of alternatives. At the end of the book, she gets serious about the lack of improvements that have occurred in birth control technology. I liked the book.

the word love appears over and over and over

A very bizarre book that was informative, interesting, and well-written. It doesn't have much to do with the future of sex, but it captures the anarchy, chaos, and variety of the past 30 years up to the present. In fairness, it's an exploration of the outer edges, and folks (like myself) who live in "flyover country" may have trouble grasping the big picture -- if there is one. One quibble is that amid all the craziness, the word love appears over and over and over. It's never really defined, and, in a book otherwise off the handle, a definition of what Miss Witt means by "love" is needed. Perhaps it's characteristic of the circles in which she travels, but a lot of the sex seems disconnected from the rest of each person's personalities, giving the impression that sexuality isn't grounded in and reflective of anything deeper. I'll let the reader decide.

The joy of exploration

Larkin captures the heart-thumping thrill of world exploration with surgical precision. One can only assume that she has the heart of an explorer to have been able to capture the mind of John Cabot so utterly. She is our generation's Boswell, only with the lyric sensibility of a true poet. A must-read.

Una novela con multiples planos narrativos, con un lenguaje muy rico y sugerente. Los personajes son muy convincentes y las situaciones se desarrollan en forma dramatica. Puede parecer una novela policiaca pero va mucho mas alla pues plantea una problematica moderna y refleja la sociedad corrupta y decadente de nuestra epoca. A todo esto hay que agregar que tiene un gran sentido del humor y se recrea en el lenguaje, en las acepciones de laspalabras y en sus multiples significados.

A good story but needed a strong editor. I like long books but this long book was about 2x as long as it needed to be. The pages
"written" in the voice of the central character rambled endlessly. Interesting plot, could have benefited by careful edits.

Mar�a Paz acaba encarcelada por el crimen y viviendo una pesadilla.

La trama de Hot Sur est� impecablemente construida. Durante su largo avance, hay cantidades de vueltas y sorpresas que complican cada vez m�s la historia. Sin duda, Laura Restrepo sabe enganchar al lector. Constantemente mete explicaciones de qu� motiva a sus personajes. Ninguno de ellos es �ngel, ninguno cien por ciento diab�lico (aunque uno se acerca a este �ltimo).

En algunos momentos, para m�, la prosa se vuelve demasiado l�rica y la acci�n pierde velocidad. Fuera de eso, me gust� mucho la novela y la recomiendo al lector que le gusta seguir pensando en un libro despu�s de terminarlo.

About the Author

William Steig (1907-2003) was a cartoonist, illustrator and author of award-winning books for children, including Shrek!, on which the DreamWorks movies are based. Steig was born in New York City. Every member of his family was involved in the arts, and so it was no surprise when he decided to become an artist. He attended City College and the National Academy of Design. In 1930, Steig's work began appearing in The New Yorker, where his drawings have been a popular fixture ever since. He published his first children's book, Roland the Minstrel Pig, in 1968.

In 1970, Steig received the Caldecott Medal for Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. His books for children also include Dominic; The Real Thief; The Amazing Bone, a Caldecott Honor Book; Amos & Boris, a National Book Award finalist; and Abel's Island and Doctor De Soto, both Newbery Honor Books. Steig's books have also received the Christopher Award, the Irma Simonton Black Award, the William Allen White Children's Book Award, and the American Book Award. His European awards include the Premio di Letteratura per l'infanzia (Italy), the Silver Pencil Award (the Netherlands), and the Prix de la Fondation de France. On the basis of his entire body of work, Steig was selected as the 1982 U.S. candidate for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for Illustration and subsequently as the 1988 U.S. candidate for Writing.

Stieg also published thirteen collections of drawings for adults, beginning with About People in 1939, and including The Lonely Ones, Male/Female, The Agony in the Kindergarten, and Our Miserable Life.

He died in Boston at the age of 95.

the beautiful language is there

This book is for our grandson, and one of many by William Steig that we've bought. There is no more engaging story than this one, and I've read it countless times to hundreds of children over the years at the library.The drama is there, the beautiful language is there, and the picture of true friendship was never painted in a more touching way.

Beautiful story - but lots of big words and concepts

The story and illustrations of this children's book are absolutely lovely. But parents of young children be aware, the words are many on each page and they are big and advanced (on one page alone: "leisurely," "exchanging," "developed," "admiration," "delicacy," "quivering daintiness," "gemlike radiance," "grandeur," and "abounding friendliness" - phew!) and concepts - like death. I love exposing my child to these big words but it can get tiring when at every other word they stop to ask what it means - I wonder how much of the story he truly understands. I also found myself choked up at the end (spoiler alert) when the two friends, after a near death situation, part to never see each other again. My little kid had many, many big questions about death and dying and being helpless - not an ideal conversation right before bed. This book covers some big life stuff...but it is a beautiful book with a lasting story that goes deep.

Understanding Pontiac Engine Air Flow

Great book for the Pontiac enthusiast and experience engine builder. This is not the "101 Class" of Pontiac engine assembly. This book is for those who already have engine assembly knowledge or experience and want to root out the most performance using matching parts and the shared modification tips that Jim Hand has acquired through his years of hands on experience. The book provides a concise and short history of the Pontiac V-8 engine performance years. It offers insight and tips on building your short Block, assuming you already know how to assemble an engine. Camshaft selection, degreeing, and valvetrain gear is thoroughly explored and made simple to understand. Step by step modifications are shown for the Q-jet carburetor, and the AFB, Thermoquad, and multiple carb set ups. Intake manifolds and modifications are shown with test results revealed. Here is where this publication really shines - a step by step walk through in head modification; grinding, porting, polishing, valve application, and flow numbers. Good photos accompany the text and guide those who want to really make their cast iron factory heads wake up. You could skip all this and just simply buy the aftermarket Edelbrock aluminum heads, but you most likely bought this book like me because you like to do all your own assembly and want to accept the challenge of making you iron block and heads produce the most available power without going way over budget in doing so. If nothing else, it gives you a template that your buddy or local machine shop can use in modifying your iron heads for maximum performance. Next is the exhaust section that shows you what works in scavenging those spent gases out of the engine, from the high-performance Ram Air cast iron manifolds to headers, pipes, mufflers, and again, the results. Finally, many of the nations Pontiac engine builders have submitted their engine package builds and this is another great plus in using these as a guideline in building your engine. If you don't care to build your own engine, one of these builders can, but at least using this book you can ensure you understand what is being done to your engine and where you want to invest your money in gaining horsepower. Owning many stock Pontiacs over the last 30 years, and several were worn out GTO's, I was never disappointed with the factory's engine performance even when they were tired. Adding a few speed goodies and tweaking a few adjustments always made them a little faster. This book will maximize the performance potential of your new engine build and have you grinning from ear to ear when your attention to the performance details that this book offers rolls out of your driveway and lights up the rear tires to everyone else's annoyance!

Excellent Book!!! Don't Pay a Crazy Price For It!

Very Great Book. But just be patient and keep checking Amazon as much as you possibly can. I only paid $18 for a copy. Couldn't imagine paying someone's CRAZY $200+ price tag for it. People are finding and adding it all the time at "REAL WORLD" prices but they sell almost immediately.

GREAT BOOK!!!

I've only skimmed through most of the book for a quick look at what's inside and I have already gotten several ideas on what I'm planning on doing. I can hardly wait to really dig into the details of some of the more involved procedures. This book is very well written, laid out and organized. Data is presented in a format that's easy to understand and references to additional data is plentiful.

GREAT BOOK - with LOTS of tips and tricks to help your Pontiac run better!

Iyengar exponentially expands our understanding of the central role choice plays in the lives of animals and humans in a rapid-fire, many-faceted, and original inquiry that is at once personable and commanding. Too much choice

Sheena Iyengar showed--famously--that six jam choices are better than 24. Her research led to companies all over the world cutting their product lines and--counter-intuitively--boosting profits. Trader Joe's owes Iyengar a great debt. It carries about one-tenth of the jam choices, but I always leave buying at least a couple jars.

Iyengar also delves into the cultural differences that distinguish Americans from the Eastern world. Like Jonathan Haidt in The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion, Iyengar shows how Americans are culturally different, much different. Here, Iyengar writes about Americans value liberty and freedom of choice. A Japanese toddler will perform better on a puzzle, for example, if told that her mother picked the puzzle to solve. By contrast, an American toddler will ask incredulously, "Really? You asked my mom to pick?" Reviewing the preferences for domains for choice, Iyengar concludes, "Americans desired personal choice in four times as many domains of life as did the Japanese."

We should take heed of the simple truth that, as Iyengar recounts over and over, with more choice comes more regret. Followers of fundamentalist faiths are the happiest because, as Iyengar writes, "The presence of so many rules didn't debilitate people; instead, it seemed to empower them. Many of their choices were taken away, and yet they experienced a sense of control over their lives." Unitarians and atheists are the most susceptible to pessimism and depression, she finds. Collectivist cultures might value familial duty to the detriment of choice, so much so that children are asked to enter into arranged marriages. But it turns out, Iyengar shows, that arranged marriages usually have better outcomes than love-based ones.

Iyengar saves the best parts of the book for the end. There, she writes more like an old friend, giving the reader sage advice gained from time, on how to make better decisions on all things big and small. For big decisions, get some help. "We frequently look to sources of authority and expertise to alleviate the burden of a difficult decision--finding someone who tells us that we went the right way in a tough bind can go a long way toward making us feel better about it, even if the actual outcome remains unchanged," she writes. And you'll make better choices--and leave yourself with less regret--if you remind yourself of your most deeply committed principles. "The key is to recognize--to return to the words of de Tocqueville--that in order to "hold fast" to something, one must allow oneself to be held to something," Iyengar advises. "That commitment may be one of the hardest things to practice in a world of so much choice.""

And what about a grander goal, more important than choosing the best flat-screen? To lead a better life, Iyengar counsels us to define our narrative. Use a simple exercise: "Write three versions of the story of your life (or a particular period in your life), looking in turn through the lenses of destiny, chance, and choice. Which of these versions is most motivating for you? Which one encourages you to try harder, push further, reach higher? Which emphasizes that you have the power to go from where you are today to where you want to be tomorrow?"

A lot of what Iyengar writes is described elsewhere in this genre, both in the best-seller from Iyengar's former mentor, Thinking, Fast and Slow, and in a more Malcolm Gladwell-ish format in How We Decide. But I got the impression while reading Iyengar's book that she earnestly wants to help her readers make better choices and lead better lives. Her book is not just academic pursuit, but a gift of knowledge from someone that knows so much about her field that she can't help but share it with us.

This was a great read! In The Art of Choosing, Professor Sheena Iyengar provides a comprehensive overview of the many aspects of choice, ranging from the role of choice in culture to elucidating the factors that affect our decisions. Iyengar identifies the systems behind decision making and proposes methods to reduce stress while making choices. Psychology of choice permeates nearly all aspects of daily life as our choices shape and define our identities.

Interesting and worth while

The Art of Choosing is an interesting, entertaining and useful book. It focuses heavily on the psychology of making choices and psychological effects of being faced with and making choices. This focus is understandable because the author is a psychologist. However, she also examines the biological, sociological, economic and political aspects of choosing. The book is practical rather than philosophical in its approach and purpose. However, profound philosophical and theological premises underlie the work. Author Iyvengar says on more than one occasion that the course of one's life is determined by chance, destiny and choices. Unfortunately, she never examines the first two elements. Her inclusion of destiny may or may not have something to do with her Indian background. Some western readers might argue whether there is any such thing as destiny (karma?). More importantly assuming we have any real ability to make choices assumes free will, one of the most fundamental of theological and philosophical issues. The nature of chance is also unexamined. Some of us would argue, on scientific grounds, that randomness is built in the very nature and foundations of the universe, of reality, and that the interaction of chance and the limitations it places on choice and what the tension between these elements means for a coherent world view are questions worth exploring in any discussion of choice and choosing.

He described the enterprise: "It is a tortuous process coming up with the decisions that involve the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. It's not simple. . . . You agonize over your decisions. You agonize over your plan." Because the Central Command commander would execute air operations in all phases of his offensive plan, the air campaign was the dominant feature in the Gulf War of 1991. As early as August 25, 1990, the basic framework of the war plan had emerged, with Phase I, Strategic Air Campaign; Phase II, Air Supremacy in Kuwait; Phase III, Attrition of Ground Combat Power (later, Preparation of the Battlefield); and Phase IV, Ground Attack.
