The Fugitive, by Pramoedya Ananta Toer

Written while Pramoedya Ananta Toer was imprisoned by the Dutch for his role in the Indonesian revolution after World War II, The Fugitive was his first major novel and the first to be published in the United States. Set during the final days of World War II, The Fugitive tells the harrowing story of a young platoon leader who has led a failed nationalist revolt against Japanese forces occupying Indonesia. Betrayed by a co-conspirator and forced to disguise himself as a beggar, he sets out to find his fiancee, while eluding the military forces who will kill him if they capture him. Combining acute political and social criticism with a gripping, deeply moving narrative, this timeless story of a soldier's return home will haunt the memories of all who read it.

From Publishers Weekly
Young Indonesian platoon commander Raden Hardo, his nationalist army revolt quashed by a traitorous coconspirator, returns to Java in disguise only to be betrayed to the Japanese. Written in 1947, while Pramoedya was in a Dutch forced-labor camp, "this shattering tale is a microcosm of innumerable personal tragedies, of lives pulverized by war and conquest," said PW.
Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Indonesian novelist Toer has been a political prisoner in his native land for much of his writing life: All the novels by this winner of the 1988 PEN Freedom Award, including this, his first, have been banned by the Indonesian government. Written in 1947 while Toer was imprisoned in a forced labor camp, this is the powerfully told story of Raden Hardo, betrayed by a fellow officer while leading a revolt against the Japanese army. Disguised as a beggar, Hardo flees through the countryside, for if he is captured he will be executed. Hoping to see his fiancee, Hardo cautiously returns to his native village, where he encounters his father and future father-in-law. Although he refuses to reveal his identity to his family, he is recognized and betrayed again, thus setting into motion a tragic chain of events. Toer's tough, unsentimental style forcefully expresses his view of art as an instrument for political protest and change. Recom mended.

War's Toll in Indonesia
By James W. Fonseca
A short novel by the classic Indonesian author. Like most of his other work, it focuses on the wars of his country fighting first for independence from the Dutch colonial occupiers and then from the Japanese after their invasion in WW II. Our hero in the book revolted against the Japanese and is now a hunted fugitive disguised as a beggar. So far he has survived several manhunts but just before the defeat of the Japanese he is captured while visiting his home area. His father and fiance are being held as hostages pending his capture. We are told in the introduction that the book is structured as a Javanese shadow-box puppet play. It has a repetitive negative theme to each of its four chapters: “No, I will not go home; no I am not your son, he lies to his elderly father; no I am not sentimental in still having faith in my childhood friend who betrayed our trust, and no, his fiance says, I don’t know where the fugitive is.” Like the author’s other work, including All That is Gone, which I have reviewed, the main theme is the human toll of warfare.

Fascinating, but uneven in tone
By Mary Whipple
Published in Indonesia in 1950, this very early novel by Indonesia's foremost author focuses on the final days of the Japanese occupation during World War II. The main character, Hardo, and two soldier friends had aided the Japanese in ousting the Dutch colonials who had ruled the country for years, their ultimate goal being the independence of the country. After becoming disillusioned by the Japanese, they had attempted a coup, only to have it fail because of betrayal by one of the men. The novel focuses on Hardo, running for his life ever since, in three encounters he has while disguised as a beggar, each encounter showcasing the conflicting loyalties within the country, and developing the suspense.

Though the novel is intriguing and its powerful descriptions of nature are absolutely stunning, it is strangely inconsistent in tone and feels stylistically fragmented. Hardo's first encounter, with his future father-in-law, is positively operatic, resembling a duet between wooden characters, their dueling voices swirling around almost like a canon. "Come to the house," the traitorous father-in-law says, echoing the invitation more than fifteen times, offering Hardo, disguised as a beggar, a variety of enticements, each of which he refuses. In the second encounter, with his own father, the operatic style dies, more communication takes place, and a narrative emerges. The third section, a meeting with co-conspirator Dipo, several others involved in the rebellion, Japanese officers, and the father-in-law is a fully developed theatrical scene, tying together the narrative and themes through dialogue.

With the novel's structure echoing a variety of genres and its characters subordinated to theme, I found it difficult to become emotionally involved with the characters themselves, however much I might have been sympathetic to their plight and fascinated by the subject matter. The novel clearly presages the greatness which comes to fruition in Pramoedya's later tetralogy, This Earth of Mankind, however, and I highly recommend it as an introduction to his more mature work. Open Your Eyes
By K. Gibson
It was my good fortune to discover and read this book many years ago. I recently bought fresh copies to share with others.

Other reviewers for Amazon see certain aspects of this novel as faults while I see them as virtues.

Mary Whipple's very useful comments remindeded me of the distinctions in tone with which Pramoedya characterizes conversations between the different players. Mary, if you can speak to your mother-in-law as informally, comfortably and confidently as you speak to your mother (is that a bad example) you are rare, even in America, or long married. Consider the traditional culture of Indonesia half a century ago. I think Pramoedya is telling us something by the way he says something even more than by what he says.

S. Kelly, who seems forced to be in Indonesia and forced to read Pramoedya, is in my heaven. I was in Jakarta on a quick business trip, two decades ago. When I came home I told my wife I had fallen in love with a country I hardly knew. Pramoedya helps me maintain the affair. Consider "The Fugitive" in the context of the land that brought the world the shadow play.... You might like "The Girl from the Coast."

For those with a hearty appetite I recommend the Buru Quartet - four novels "written" through oral recitation and memorization committed to print once the author was out of prison. This man is a literary giant and a political hero.

Please note that this slim paperback is way overpriced at the publisher's list price. I got my new copy from amazingsalebooks, an Amazon seller, for $9.35 including shipping. The pristine, new copy arrived in two days by USPS. I am only allowed to give a paperback copy to one of my former students who finds himself a prisoner at juvenile hall. My new hardcover copy (also pristine) cost less than the paperback!

I now have the confidence, to make sushi at home!
By Amy E Villeneuve
Being a fan of sushi, I was excited to get this paperback copy of SUSHI AT HOME: A Mat-to-Table Sushi Cookbook by Rockridge Press. I have always thought about trying to make sushi at home but was always too intimidated to give it a go. After reading this book, I have the confidence to try it now. There is so much I did not know, but this book really breaks it down, step by step with detail and pics. I like that I can get the answers I have questions to very easily in this book. I learned so much about all the different techniques and ways to slice fish, make rice and so much more! I really like that there is a chapter for everything I need to know about making sushi at home. I cannot wait to get the ingredients and supplies and have a sushi making party with friends and family. I think this is a wonderful book for anyone who loves sushi and has always wanted to make it at home! I think this would make a nice gift for someone who is skilled in the kitchen and likes sushi as well as entertaining at home. I cannot wait to see my family and friends faces when I serve up my sushi made at home! I recommend it.I received this product in exchange for a review. I love sushi but admit
By Colleen
I love sushi but admit, I am a “newbie” (well, I’ve been eating it for only 5 years and I’m still afraid to try most of it!). This book gave a lot of good information on the different kinds of sushi, how it’s prepared and even tips and techniques for making your own sushi at home. One of my favorite parts was learning how to cook sushi rice, since that seems to be one of the hardest things for me to successfully do (who am I kidding, I am an awful cook!) The recipes are very detailed and pretty easy to follow. My sushi is still looking really ugly (hoping practice will make that better), but it does TASTE yummy, at least!

Great Book But Not for Beginners
By Stefani Kalik
I have never made sushi before in my life and although I absolutely love eating sushi this book is definitely not great for someone with absolutely no experience making it. I would definitely recommend it for someone who has prior knowledge of making sushi since the recipes and other aspects of the book are great. Sadly when it comes to teaching you how to make the sushi the book falls flat. There are illustrations of how to filet and slice fish, and roll sushi, and make a variety of kinds of sushi however they are hand drawn, not actual pictures and they really don't help me at all. Maybe it's my learning style since I am a very visual and hands on learner but the illustrations just confuse me.

Otherwise I think it's a very well written book with great sushi recipes. My sushi hasn't been pretty but it has tasted good! The recipes the book have great descriptions of the ingredients for the recipes including what kind of rice is best, how to cook sushi rice, the best types of fish to use, what equipment you need to make the sushi, and even the best knifes to use. The directions for the recipes themselves are quite detailed and well written. I think if I had someone teach me how to properly make the sushi that this book would be a very useful resource for delicious recipes! *I received this book at a discount in exchange for my honest review

From Publishers Weekly
The short fiction (each piece is one to five pages long) in this collection represents the richness and variety of American writers. A few are no longer contemporary (Hemingway, Malamud, Cheever), many are well established (Paley, Oates, Updike, Donald Barthelme, Ray Bradbury, Peter Taylor, Raymond Carver) and many are newer presences on the fiction scene. With a tiny "frontisstory" by Robert Coover, a lighthearted introduction by Shapard and afterwords about the short-short-story form by 40 outstanding American writers, the definition of what lies between as "sudden fiction" is well attended to. The 70 pieces themselveshighly compressed, often tantalizingdisplay a multiplicity of modes and derive from a variety of traditions. The collection presents a group of writers whose miniature stories do, indeed, as the editors suggest, "confer form on small corners of chaos."

From Library Journal
This anthology contains 70 stories, all under five pages. There are a few standards by Hemingway and Cheever, but most are contemporary pieces by such writers as Paley, Oates, and Carver and some unknowns. At its bestas exemplified by the offerings of John Upike, Arturo Vivante, Bel Kaufman, and Charles Johnsonthis "sudden fiction" form is devastating, at its worst, mere anecdote, but overall this is an unusual and well-conceived collection. In an afterword, 40 writers/editors discuss the genre's limitationsdoes it exist? what to call it?succinctly enough that the book may serve as a text for creative writing students as well as an interesting departure for the general reader. Review
The editors of Sudden Fiction argue for consideration of the shott-short, a highly compressed narrative of under 2,000 words, as a uniquely modern sub-genre of the traditional short story. But while presenting the reader with an abundance of short-short fiction, neither they, nor the writers commenting in the theoretical "AfterWords" section of this anthology, are able to arrive at common agreement as to the aims and characteristics of this form. This is perhaps as it should be, given the diverse antecedents of the short-short in such types as the fablek, folktale, and Zen koan, as well as the myriad directions the contemporary offshoot has taken, encompassing works as different from one another as Tennessee Williams' carefully plotted narrative, "Tent Worms," a modernist fable like H. E. Francis' "Sitting," Peter Taylor's psychological study "A Walled Garden," and the anecdotal humor of Roy Blount Jr.'s "Five Ives." Hemingway and a few other past masters are included to show the historical development of the short-short, but emphasis is on stories of the past five years. Updike, Oates, and Malamud are represented, as are writers recently established, such as Raymond Carver and Jayne Anne Phillips. While not resolving any of the theoretical problems involved, this is nevertheless a lively and thoughtprovoking collection of short fiction. -- From Independent Publisher

A classic of short short fiction, probably my third copy, as people keep walking off with it. Great variety, fun to read, excellent resource for teachers, students and writers.

Bottled Lightning
By Riley James
~It's a great book to have. You can read it on the subway and chew on a few stories in one transit, or just scan the beginnings and look for what catches your eye, or you can curl up on a rainy day and devour the whole book. It's a great way to meet many writers you've heard of but haven't yet read. The only problem is the editor had this in mind so some writers, I presume, were selected because of who they were not what they wrote. Some pieces are vignettes more than "Sudden Fiction." Conversely, some stories are just marvelous: have no wasted words, tightly woven plots, and compelling characters. These stories are a marvel to see and a must for anyone interested in fiction. It's incredible how much depth is possible in such a short space. If you've ever tried to write this book will impress you with how much the right word is essential. Mark Twain once said "the difference between the right word and almost right word is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug." Here is lightning-or is it the bug?-bottled up.

The best kind of variety
By Kristen Tsetsi
From Hemingway to Jackson, these authors provide evidence that it doesn't take a lot of words to create immense literary impact. These stories are funny, sad, insightful, odd, and cold - in all the best ways.

The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York, by Robert A. Caro

One of the most acclaimed books of our time, winner of both the Pulitzer and the Francis Parkman prizes, The Power Broker tells the hidden story behind the shaping (and mis-shaping) of twentieth-century New York (city and state) and makes public what few have known: that Robert Moses was, for almost half a century, the single most powerful man of our time in New York, the shaper not only of the city's politics but of its physical structure and the problems of urban decline that plague us today.

In revealing how Moses did it--how he developed his public authorities into a political machine that was virtually a fourth branch of government, one that could bring to their knees Governors and Mayors (from La Guardia to Lindsay) by mobilizing banks, contractors, labor unions, insurance firms, even the press and the Church, into an irresistible economic force--Robert Caro reveals how power works in all the cities of the United States. Moses built an empire and lived like an emperor. He personally conceived and completed public works costing 27 billion dollars--the greatest builder America (and probably the world) has ever known. Without ever having been elected to office, he dominated the men who were--even his most bitter enemy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, could not control him--until he finally encountered, in Nelson Rockefeller, the only man whose power (and ruthlessness in wielding it) equalled his own.

Review
"Surely the greatest book ever written about a city." --David Halberstam

"A masterpiece of American reporting. It's more than the story of a tragic figure or the exploration of the unknown politics of our time. It's an elegantly written and enthralling work of art." --Theodore H. White

"The most absorbing, detailed, instructive, provocative book ever published about the making and raping of modern New York City and environs and the man who did it, about the hidden plumbing of New York City and State politics over the last half-century, about the force of personality and the nature of political power in a democracy. A monumental work, a political biography and political history of the first magnitude." --Eliot Fremont-Smith, New York

"One of the most exciting, un-put-downable books I have ever read. This is definitive biography, urban history, and investigative journalism. This is a study of the corruption which power exerts on those who wield it to set beside Tacitus and his emperors, Shakespeare and his kings." --Daniel Berger, Baltimore Evening Sun

"Fascinating, every oversize page of it." --Peter S. Prescott, Newsweek

"A study of municipal power that will change the way any reader of the book hereafter peruses his newspaper." --Philip Herrera, Time

"A triumph, brilliant and totally fascinating. A majestic, even Shakespearean, drama about the interplay of power and personality." --Justin Kaplan

"In the future, the scholar who writes the history of American cities in the twentieth century will doubtless begin with this extraordinary effort." --Richard C. Wade, The New York Times Book Review

"The feverish hype that dominates the merchandising of arts and letters in America has so debased the language that, when a truly exceptional achievement comes along, there are no words left to praise it. Important, awesome, compelling--these no longer summon the full flourish of trumpets this book deserves. It is extraordinary on many levels and certain to endure." --William Greider, The Washington Post Book World

"Apart from the book's being so good as biography, as city history, as sheer good reading, The Power Broker is an immense public service." --Jane Jacobs

"Required reading for all those who hope to make their way in urban politics; for the reformer, the planner, the politician and even the ward heeler." --Jules L. Wagman, Cleveland Press

"An extraordinary study of the workings of power, individually, institutionally, politically, and economically in our republic."--Edmund Fuller, The Wall Street Journal

"Caro has written one of the finest, best-researched and most analytically informative descriptions of our political and governmental processes to appear in a generation." --Nicholas Von Hoffman, TheWashington Post

"Caro's achievement is staggering. The most unlikely subjects--banking, ward politics, construction, traffic management, state financing, insurance companies, labor unions, bridge building--become alive and contemporary. It is cheap at the price and too short by half. A milestone in literary and publishing history." --Donald R. Morris, The Houston Post

"Irresistible reading. It is like one of the great Russian novels, overflowing with characters and incidents that all fit into a vast mosaic of plot and counterplot. Only this is no novel. This is a college education in power corruption." --George McCue, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

From the Back Cover
This is the first and foremost a brilliant multidimensional portrait of a man-an extraordinary man who, denied power within the normal framework of the democratic process, stepped outside that framework to grasp power sufficient to shape a great city and hold sway over the very texture of millions of lives.

There and back again (but not on the Long Island Expressway)
By Bruce Appelbaum
I first picked up The Power Broker when it was published 25 years ago. Since then I've re-read it three or four times over the years. It is a true monument to Caro that this book has remained in print in both hc and pb over these years.
This massive work is at the same time a biography of Robert Moses and the metropolitan New York City area. Moses, originally a reformer and a true public servant, somehow became tainted by the power entrusted to him. It was his way or no way -- and once he became firmly entrenched there was no "no way." A typical Moses tactic: design a great public work (bridge, for example) and underestimate the budget. A bargain sure to be approved and funded by the politicians! Then run out of money halfway through construction. The rest of the money will surely be forthcoming because no politician wants to be associated with a half-finished and very visibile "failure" -- it's much better to take credit for an "against the odds" success.
I grew up in NYC at the tail end of Moses' influence and I remember the 1964 Worlds Fair in NYC vividly, especially a "guidebook" that lionized Moses' construction prowess. In school, Moses' contribution was also taught (always positively) when we had units covering NYC history. If nothing else, Moses understood the power of good publicity, and used tactics later adopted by the current mayor (King Rudy) to control the press and public opinion. This book brings Moses back to human scale and deconstructs (no pun intended) his impact on the city.
The book is long, detailed, and compelling. Great beach reading -- especially at Jones Beach! Now that it is celebrating its 25th anniversary, a new retrospective afterword from the author would be appreciated (perhaps a reprint of the article he wrote for the New Yorker a few years ago on how he wrote the book).
An interesting counterpoint to this biography of Moses is The Great Bridge by David McCollough. This story of a great public works project is also a biography of the Roeblings, the family of engineers who designed and built it. They shared Moses' singlemindedness, but the methods and results had far less negative results.

By 300 Weatherby
There really needs to be a Kindle version of this. An awesome book, but even more useful as an exercise weight. Read 10 pages then do a few curls, repeat several times per chapter. You will come away with a keen understanding of the man who built much of NYCs infrastructure as well as a set of biceps like no other.

A public work in itself
By Elizabeth S. Case
I was attracted to this book because I thought, now that suburban sprawl is a fait accompli and we have all decided it's a bad thing, we might want to understand the philosophy behind it in the first place. There is that in this book, and so much more. Basically, Moses never really grasped that things had changed since he first built parkways to Long Island in the 1920s. He thought of driving principally as a recreational activity, or a means of reaching recreation. It never occurred to him that people would be using them to go long distances to and from work every day. And he refused to listen to any voice beside his own. More than anything else, this towering book is a uniquely American story in the vein of Citizen Kane (as well as all the other narratives referred to above). It's easy to paraphrase a line from that film and say that if Moses hadn't had power, he might have been a truly great man. Ironically enough, Caro pays tribute to Moses best by having done this biography determinedly and exhaustively ... the way Moses himself would have done such a job. And his storytelling skills are such that you go from rooting for Moses in the '20s as he fights the Gatsby-types to build his state parks to rooting (often unsuccessfully) against him in the '50s as he arrogantly bulldozes highways through city neighborhoods and lets the machine scalp the poor through his "housing" program. All the way, Moses's best and worst qualities - a twisted genius - are laid bare. If I had to say something negative, it would be to second the comments that there's still more to the story ... I'd love to see an uncut version, even if it were 2,000 pages. And I'd love to see a movie, too.

Moby Dick, by Herman Melville, Raymond Bishop

Acclaimed by D. H. Lawrence as "the greatest book of the sea ever written," Moby Dick looms large in America's literary consciousness — and the style and philosophical content of Melville's 1851 epic was generations ahead of its time. Today the chronicle of a vengeful captain's obsessive, self-destructive search for a white whale ranks among the great American novels, and this volume does full justice to its preeminence. Twenty-five glorious woodcut illustrations from the 1930 Albert and Charles Boni version complement the newly reset edition, which also features an abundance of decorative elements.
Much of Moby Dick was inspired by the 1821 work Narratives of the Wreck of the Whale-Ship Essex, which in turn inspired the 2015 movie In the Heart of the Sea, directed by Ron Howard and starring Chris Hemsworth.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-Opening with the classic line, "Call me Ishmael," the narrator's New England accent adds a touch of authenticity to this sometimes melodramatic presentation. The St. Charles Players do a credible job on the major roles, but some of the group responses, such as "Aye, aye Captain," sound more comic than serious. This adaptation retains a good measure of Melville's dialogue and key passages which afford listeners a vivid connection with the lengthy novel. Background music and appropriate sound effects enhance the telling of the story about Captain Ahab's obsessive pursuit of the malevolent white whale. The cassettes are clearly marked, and running times are noted on each side of the tapes. Announcements at the beginning of each side and a subtle chime signal at the end make it easy to follow the story, but a stereo player must be used to hear some dialogue. The lightweight cardboard package is inadequate for circulation. Done in a radio theatre format, the recording does a nice job of introducing the deeper themes of the book and covering the major events. For school libraries that support an American literature curriculum, this recording offers a different interpretation of an enduring classic.

From Library Journal
November 14 marks the 150th anniversary of Melville's salty saga of vengeance and obsession. Now a contender for the great American novel, this book was harpooned at the time of its 1851 publication by critics who found it overly long and boorish (observations no doubt still shared by countless high school students). They felt that like Ahab, the story didn't have much of a leg to stand on. The once lucrative whaling industry also was in its death throes and of little interest to readers. The book was forgotten for decades before being rediscovered in the 1920s by scholars who understood and appreciated the multilevel symbolism and allegory dismissed by their 19th-century predecessors. Melville published little after the failure of Moby-Dick and made his living as a customs inspector in New York City, where he was born in 1819 and died in complete obscurity in 1891. He is buried in the Bronx. This edition of his masterwork includes the full text along with illustrations of whales, whaling barks, and whaling instruments; maps; and a new introduction by Nathaniel Philbrick. A lot for the price.

Review
(in full Moby-Dick; or, The Whale) Novel by Herman Melville, published in London in October 1851 and published a month later in the United States. Moby-Dick is generally regarded as its author's masterpiece and one of the greatest American novels. The basic plot of Moby-Dick is simple. The narrator (who asks to be called "Ishmael") tells of the last voyage of the ship Pequod out of New Bedford, Mass. Captain Ahab is obsessed with the pursuit of the white whale Moby-Dick, which finally kills him. On that level, the work is an intense, superbly authentic narrative. Its theme and central figure, however, are reminiscent of Job in his search for justice and of Oedipus in his search for truth. The novel's richly symbolic language and tragic hero are indicative of Melville's deeper concerns: the equivocal defeats and triumphs of the human spirit and its fusion of creative and murderous urges. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

your understanding might boil down to the quality of the gloss
By Caraculiambro
Unless you are a naval historian or a Melville scholar, you probably won't have a rewarding (or even comprehensible) time with Moby-Dick at this remove unless the edition you're using comes with a good set of footnotes. Here's the skinny on the various editions currently on shelves:

THESE HAVE FOOTNOTES ON THE PAGE ITSELF:

* Charles Feidelson, Jr.'s annotated edition. Unquestionably the most all-around useful edition of Moby-Dick ever printed. Generous and highly useful footnotes right on the page, covering lexical, allusional, and cross-referential items. Two disadvantages: you may at times feel put upon by Feidelson's interlarded interpretations, and the thing is totally out of print. Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1964. ISBN: 067260311X

* The "Norton critical" edition, edited by Parker and Hayford. The edition most widely employed by scholars. Stingier with the footnotes than Feidelson, but still a good second choice. Many useful essays at the end. The layout of the text is a bit hard on the eye, though. Make sure you get the SECOND edition, from 2001. ISBN: 0393972836

* The "Barnes and Noble Classics" edition. The footnotes for the most part are skimpy and confined to obscure vocabulary, not cultural and literary allusions. ISBN: 1-59308-018-2

THESE HAVE A FOOTNOTES SECTION IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK:

* The "Oxford World Classics" edition. About 11 pp. at the end. ISBN: 0-19-283385-5

* The "Modern Library" edition. About 13 pp. at the end. ISBN: 0-679-78327-X

* The "Penguin Classics" edition. About 15 pp. of notes at the end by Tom Quirk. ISBN: 0-14-24.3724-7 (This is their fancy hardbound version: see next item.)

* The "Penguin Classics" edition. About 15 pp. of notes at the end by Tom Quirk. ISBN: 0-14-03.9084-7 (This is their paperback edition, which looks totally different but is exactly the same as the previous entry. This claims to be the "definitive text," but any such claim is spurious -- cf. Hayford and Parker [v.s.] for a good discussion of why. Penguin previously came out with an identical-looking but much thicker version annotated by Harold Beaver: the notes for that edition were copious, but on the whole too fanciful and self-indulgent to be of much use.)

* The "Library of America" edition. (This is the one included in the same volume with "Redburn" and "White Jacket.") About 9 pp. of notes at the end. Unfortunately, they're a bit skimpy. You see, they're of the "go get it yourself" kind. For example, when Melville writes, "send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger," the footnotes -- the incidence of which is not marked in the running text -- merely says "Luke 16:24". In other words, you've got to look it up yourself. So I would characterize the footnotes as sparse and taciturn: they'll clue you in to the source, but as for the exact wording of something and its accumulated historical connotations, you've got to come up with those yourself. ISBN: 0-940450-09-7

THESE HAVE NO FOOTNOTES WHATSOEVER:

Why do publishers still print editions of Moby Dick without any footnotes or glossary whatsoever? Who can read it? What a waste of paper. I get so irritated! In any event, the following publishers have decided you'd prefer your white whale raw:

* The "Bantam Classic" edition. ISBN: 0-553-21311-3 Ain't got jack.

* The "Everyman's Library" edition. ISBN: 0-679-40559-3. Zilch.

* The "Penguin 150th Anniversary" edition. ISBN: 0-14-20.0008-6 Bupkiss! Handsome, though.

* The "Arion Press" edition. ISBN: 0-520-04354-5. Also annoyingly oversized.

And that's my bit of altruism for the week.

This book is gonna make it!
By Adam Roberts
Finishing "Moby Dick" goes up there with my greatest (and few) academic achievements. It was a gruelling read, but---in the end---completely worthwhile.
I've been reading it for 6 months. I started over the summer, during an abroad program in Oxford, and I remember sitting outside reading when one of the professors came over, saw what I was reading, and said: "It's a very strange book, isn't it?"
Looking back, that might be the best way to describe it. The blurb from D.H. Lawrence on the back cover agrees: Moby Dick "commands a stillness in the soul, an awe...[it is] one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world."
Now there are those who will say that the book's middle is unbearable---with its maddeningly detailed accounts of whaling. Part of me agrees. That was the hardest to get through. But, still, even the most dull subject offers Melville an opportunity to show off his writing chops. He's a fantastic writer---his text most resembles that of Shakespeare.
And, like one Shakespeare's characters, Melville sees all the world as a stage. Consider this beautiful passage from the first chapter:
"Though I cannot tell why it was exactly that those stage managers, the Fates, put me down for this shabby part of a whaling voyage, when others were set down for magnifient parts in high tragedies, and short and easy parts in genteel comedies, and jolly parts in farces--though I cannot tell why this was exactly; yet, now that I recall all the circumstances, I think I can see a little into the springs and motives which being cunningly presented to me under various disguises, induced me to set about performing the part I did, besides cajoling me into the delusion that it was a choice resulting from my own unbiased freewill and discriminating judgment."
The end of "Moby Dick" informs the rest of the book, and in doing so makes rereading it inevitable. It is telling that Moby Dick doesn't appear until page 494. It is telling, because, the majority of the book is spent in anticipation---in fact, the whole book is anticipation. It's not unlike sex, actually---delaying gratification to a point of almost sublime anguish. What comes at the book's end, then, is mental, physical, and spiritual release (as well as fufillment).
The book leaves you with questions both large and small. I was actually most troubled with this question---What happened to Ishmael? No, we learn his fate at the book's end, but where was he throughout it? We all know how it starts---"Call me Ishmael"---and the book's first few chapters show him interacting with Queequeg and an innkeeper. But then we lose him onboard the Pequod---we never see him interact with anyone. No one ever addresses him. He seems to witness extremely private events---conferences in the Captain's quarters, conversations aboard multiple boats, and--what can only be his conjecture--the other characters' internal dialogue. Is he a phantom? What is he that he isn't? Somehow I think this question masks a much larger and more important one.
Try "Moby Dick." Actually, don't try it---read it. Work at it. Like lifting weights a bit heavier than you're used to, "Moby Dick" will strengthen your brain muscle. Don't believe those who hate it, they didn't read it. They didn't work at it. Be like Ishmael, who says: "I try all things; I achieve what I can." Or, more daringly, be like Ahab, whose ambition is his curse, but whose curse propels and writes the book itself.

Open your mind
By TJ
Last year I decided to expand my intellectual horizons by reading a series of American literary classics. Moby Dick was the first book on my list. It took me three months to finish this legendary story and, looking back on it now, I must say that it was worth every minute. To others who are considering this effort I say this: buttress your stamina and open your mind. This is not John Grisham or Tom Clancy. You will be reading high literature and you will be required to think. If you do so, Ishmael, Ahab and crew will open a window to some of mankind's most profound questions: Is it better to fight evil or promote virtue? Where is the line between honorable justice and blind vengeance? Do bad things happen because the universe is evil or just indifferent? The true pleasure to be derived from reading this book can be found by closing its pages every so often and reflecting on the questions that it will raise in your mind. A completely different experience than breezing through the latest best-seller, but much more rewarding.
Be aware that Moby Dick is many types of books in one. It is part adventure story, part sermon, part history of whaling, part encyclopedia of whale anatomy, part metaphysical allegory. Expect it to change periodically as you move through it, be receptive to each part, and don't try to compartmentalize it as any one particular type of work.

Love this book
By M. Vega
I wanted to steal this book from my local library but resisted. Happily it was available through Amazon. L. A. Fuertes is an inspiration to any artist whose muse is nature and in particular birds. His passion and dedication motivate me to peer as deeply into the subject and the whole space that surrounds it. Audubon was given the accolades but the recognition truly belonged to Fuertes. His murals still grace the walls of the Museum of Natural History in New York City.

Beautiful Illustrations
By silky69
I love this book for the beautiful artwork of birds. Many of the plates are in color, and many are in black and white.

The biography of this wonderful artist, Louis Agaxxiz Fuertes is also very interesting.
Overall, this is a wonderful book with interesting biography, beautiful pages filled with his art of both birds, other animals, maps, and poems, along with some photographs of the artist.

Very nicely compiled.
