A cracking debut novel

I found this book to be a thoroughly absorbing book from start to finish, with quite a few clever plot twists throughout. The reader never quite knows which way the plot will unfold and exactly what happened to two abducted young schoolgirls in a historic 30 year old case and the story is revealed in cleverly crafted, sometimes hazy layers bit by bit.

Beautifully written and without any scenes of sickening gratuitous violence, in a style reminiscent of some of the classic crime writers with the focus on inhabitants of a small town, in this case one in Derbyshire.

The only survivor of the abduction Rachel, who has very limited recollections of the fateful day, makes a living as a genealogist, unravelling the mysteries of the family history of her clients and it is through her research experience that she begins to unravel the details of the case and discovers exactly what happened and who was responsible. Rachel isn't the only one though who methodically works through the clues and background details, there are others, including the detectives working on the case particularly Connie Childs, the young DC.

The denouement towards the end is both clever and chilling as the perpetrators are revealed and one of the characters faces danger.

I hope to read more from this author. For a debut novel, this one is a cracker and was very hard to put down

Why does this book work so well?

Why does this book work so well?

I have a couple of theories. One is the sense of place: small town Derbyshire, England, mid-winter; I grew up in neighbouring Nottinghamshire so I’m familiar with the Peak District and can attest to what a great job the author did rendering the location this well while animating it with a strong sense of community.

The second reason why this book works so well is, I think, its enquiry into ancestry. Central character Rachel Jones is the surviving one of two schoolgirls kidnapped in 1978; now she makes her living as a genealogist, helping clients map their family trees.

The author’s skill lies in deepening the first strength with the second, showing the interconnectedness of a community across the generations. I really don’t want to give spoilers, but let’s just say that the denouement is as surprising as it is inevitable, which is everything you hope for (but often don’t get) with such novels.

It will be interesting to see what the author does next. Let’s hope that it involves more of Detective Inspector Sadler and DC Connie Childs.

Absorbing and disturbing - great debut mystery

There is a lot to like about this novel, which creeps up on you in its storytelling. Ward does a terrific job evoking the environment and daily life of the ruggedly beautiful Peak District, as well as creating a beguiling cast of characters who manage to seem fresh even if on the surface they conform to classic crime fiction tropes.

DC Connie Childs is an ambitious young cop on the rise, itching for action and advancement in a quieter corner of Britain. DI Frank Sadler is her more reserved superior. Superintendent Llewellyn was a fresh-faced constable on the 1978 kidnapping case, and is troubled by Yvonne Jenkins' suicide. He asks Sadler and his team to take another look at the original crime, to see if modern police methods can help shed new light on the oh-so-cold case. The spirited Childs is pleased for the chance to shine while her colleague-rival junior detective is distracted by the stresses of his upcoming nuptials.

Meanwhile, Rachel Jones finds her own past brought painfully back to light: she was the girl that was found. It's an incident that's affected her in a myriad of ways ever since, even though she claims to have no memory of the events. She recovered from the kidnapping thanks to her strong-willed mother and grandmother, and is now a genealogist who specialises in the matriarchal lines of family histories. While Rachel fears the media frenzy once the press links the suicide to the old tragedy, when one of her former teachers is strangled a few days later, she realises that Pandora's Box has been opened, dark secrets are seeping out, and she'll have to take steps to protect herself while trying to work out what really happened.

Jones and Childs/Sadler investigate the past and present in separate and inter-linked ways, building to a thrilling conclusion as the disturbing truth is uncovered, and the guilty parties are backed into a corner.

This is a very female centric mystery novel. Two girls are kidnapped, by a woman. The case is resurrected due to the suicide of one woman, then the murder of another. The two main leads are female: a policewoman battling for her place in a still male-dominated world, and a middle-aged history-buff who was raised by a woman with a deep suspicion of men, and now researches and shares the forgotten stories of women in her genealogy clients' family histories. But as a male crime fiction reader, I really liked it.

Ward does a great job of evoking many issues faced by woman, historic and contemporary, without painting the male characters as caricatures (which I've seen in other such novels) or paper-thin pieces just there to play antagonist or make a political or social point. The rivalry and collegiality between Childs and her fellow DC feels authentic and multi-layered. The relationships between Childs and Sadler and Llewellyn, or Jones and other characters, likewise feel very real. Ward inserts little touches and complexities that mirror real-life into all the working, personal, and other relationships, giving them a fuller feel.

A strong theme of family history, and questions about how best to deal with troubling situations from the past, runs throughout IN BITTER CHILL. Thematically, Ward nicely balances provoking questions in the readers' mind while not getting up on a soapbox or delivering clear-cut answers. Accordingly many of those issues and questions enjoyably linger after the storyline itself is wrapped up in the final pages.

Overall, I was very impressed with this first effort from Sarah Ward. IN BITTER CHILL is like a modern take on the classic British village mystery, evoking those Golden Age trends of puzzling plots in picturesque countryside settings, delving into dark issues and secrets without being gritty or graphically violent.

I look forward to more from DC Childs, DI Sadler, and this talented author.

The authors make no apologiesfor wrapping the meat of this recording in a lot of Wonder Bread, butit's ultimately filling, if a little thin. Though it's highly amusingto hear how one can avoid a lion attack on the job or thwart a lunchthief (think hidden jalape�os), this is certainly a gag gift morethan a guide. But it's good fun. Right in the middle of ......

I bought the "original" "The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook". I loved its humor and so I gave this one a try. I cant say it's bad. However, it's somehow much more serious than the original one, thus less humorous and fun. The problem is: it's not indepth nor detailed enough to cover, in my opinion as a white collar for over 15 years, 1/5 of the common difficulties in an office.

In short, if you really wanna improve your survival opportunities in your job, there are many better alternatives in a bookstore. If you just wanna have fun, this is definitely not a good choice. Therefore, not recommended. If you really wanna buy it, I sincerely suggest you to read the "See sample pages" here on Amazon for a quick look of what those "tips" refer to.

Entertaining but less informative than the original Worst Case Book

Nice book on job interviews and surviving the workplace. Advice on how to set up your cubicle and common sense items on what to wear.

Some tongue in cheek parts though. Such as the section: "How to Get a Job You're not Qualified For". I hope nobody gets the Brain Surgeon job using the advise in this book!

Good advice such as staying positive during a job interview and answer confidently is addressed here.

Liked the area on how to disguise tattoos and how to fake tattoos if needed as well.

This book has some good information ,but is slated more toward corporate America, where you have a set dress code, and work in cubicles.

Silly, entertaining, but may actually be useful to someone!

Everyone has had dreadful bosses, scary or annoying co-workers, and everyone has felt that they arent' qualified for at least one job for which they are interviewing. Fewer of us get to sneak out of meetings- although many would love to!, or how to get out of various small places one could get trapped in. I personally really loved the section on "How to fix a Dented Company Vehicle" since my Volvo has a few dings I'd love to see gone.
The non-emergencies might be do-able; you might remember the various steps needed to pull those things off when you need a status-enhancing rumor to start flying around the workplace. Sadly, the emergencies will likely catch you unaware and you won't have the handy smooth edged guidebook in your pocket to pull out just as the office supplies start avalanching down upon you. Alas.
I was writing this review in order to be able to move the book out of my house when I decided I might need a refresher on some of these things. After all, someday soon my children will grow up and I'll need this book in case I decide to be a slacker! Just kidding!

This book is not only worth the money to pay for it, it is worth the time to read it.

I just finished reading Chris Fox's "Lifelong Writing Habit." This is an excellent book for everyone, not just writers. Fox explains how to make good habits easy to form and bad habits more difficult. The text is straight forward with no fluff or filler. The author does one more thing that I like. I don't like to stop reading to do exercises, so he makes a list of the exercises at the end of the book, so those of us who like to read the whole book first, can still do the exercises without having to go back through the book to find them.

This book gives you tools - you need to supply the motivation

As I used to have a working consistent writing habit - but slipped - this book didn't necessarily contain a ton of new information for me. That said, it was a nice, no-nonsense reminder of the things required to set up a consistent habit. It will likely also be useful to writers who haven't managed to establish a routine yet, but my guess is it will be most effective for those who already have a strong internal drive. This book gives you tools - you need to supply the motivation to actually use them.

About the Author
Craig M. Wright received his Bachelor of Music degree at the Eastman School of Music in 1966 and his Ph.D. in musicology from Harvard University in 1972. He began his teaching career at the University of Kentucky and for the past forty years has been teaching at Yale University, where he is currently the Henry L. and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Music. At Yale, Wright's courses include his perennially popular introductory course, Listening to Music (also part of the offerings of Open Yale Courses); his large lecture course Exploring the Nature of Genius; and most recently his Coursera course Introduction to Classical Music. He is the author of numerous scholarly books and articles on composers ranging from Leoninus to Bach. Wright has also been the recipient of many awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Einstein and Kinkeldey Awards of the American Musicological Society, and the Dent Medal of the International Musicological Society. In 2004, he was awarded the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Chicago. And in 2010 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, joining fellow inductee, banjo player Steve Martin. In addition to LISTENING TO MUSIC and LISTENING TO WESTERN MUSIC, EIGHTH EDITION, Wright has also published THE ESSENTIAL LISTENING TO MUSIC, SECOND EDITION; LISTENING TO MUSIC, CHINESE EDITION (Schirmer Cengage Learning/Three Union Press, 2012), translated and simplified by Profs. Li Xiujung (China Conservatory, Beijing) and Yu Zhigang (Central Conservatory, Beijing), both of whom worked with Wright at Yale; and MUSIC IN WESTERN CIVILIZATION, MEDIA UPDATE (Schirmer Cengage Learning, 2010), with coauthor Bryan Simms. He is currently at work on a volume titled MOZART'S BRAIN: EXPLORING THE NATURE OF GENIUS.

Brand new without all materials

The Digital Card that came with the book was for music download only not the actual code needed to access course materials. Charged $98 for a brand new book without the proper cards to access the course. The course code is another $98. What a waste.
