More than delivers on the promise of urban farming –offers a useful philosophy as well
By Graham H. Seibert
Curtis Stone succeeds extraordinarily well in the primary objective of this book. It is an attempt to tell the reader how to establish an urban farm. As the table of contents below indicates, he covers just about every aspect of the question. How to acquire the needed resources: urban land, primarily lawns and some equipment. He advises how to locate customers. He advises what crops to grow.

The book is intensely practical. Although he is known as "the bike farmer" in this Canadian town where he lives, and thus might be taken for a counter-culture sort, he is very forthright in saying that this identity is a marketing tool. It identifies him to his customers, and a bicycle is the cheapest means of transportation. The book is relentlessly focused on the bottom line rather than being wedded to any idealistic principles. Farming is a business, and he tells you how to optimize every aspect of the operation to make it profitable.

Obviously, locally grown organic food appeals to a well-defined sector of the population. Call them crunchy cons, yuppies, urban aesthetes, or whatever else, anybody familiar with the American or Canadian social scene will recognize his customer base. There are people who did not want mass-produced, mass marketed food, and are willing to pay a premium for fresh, pure, locally grown produce. Stone serves three sets of customers: local farmers' markets, Community Supported Agriculture, and restaurants. Community supported agriculture (CSA) are groups in the community that contract with a grower such as Stone to take produce over the course of a growing season or year. This provides a steady customer base and some predictability. The other outlets being more profitable, Stone devotes more space to describing how to establish oneself with farmers markets and restaurants.

Stone starts with several key insights. The first is that there is a broad market in North America for the kind of high quality, organic produce he is able to grow. The second insight is that lawns are a vast underused resource. There are 40 million acres of lawn in America. They account for between 30 and 60 percent of urban water use, and take a lot of time and gasoline to mow. Moreover, homeowners often see them as a pain and bother. Many lawn owners are happy to allow an urban farmer to use the land in exchange for some produce. A third is that urban land is very close to the consumer. A crop can go from field to table in a day. A fourth insight is that cities have their own ecology. There are warmer and better protected from wind than rural farms. Stone's approach all of these advantages to form a profitable business.

The most amazing observation I found in the book is how little land it takes to succeed in urban farming. A half-acre is the greatest area he discusses in the book. Even that small amount, he observes, requires hired help according to his system. Observe that quarter acre lots are extremely common in the suburbs, and you can conclude that it is not difficult to satisfy the land requirements.

Going to the bottom line, Stone writes about generating incomes in the five figure range, comparable with teachers and other professionals who will be among his customers. I will venture some observations that Stone only implies. A five figure income to an urban farmer is a lot more than it is to a teacher. The urban farmer doesn't need to spend a lot of money on clothes, a car to get to and from work, and the other trappings of a professional life. Being reliant on a bicycle (perhaps battery assisted, to pull around a Rototiller on a trailer) is an immediate money saver. A social life is built-in to an urban farmer's life. He is in constant contact with neighbors, chefs, customers in the farmers' market. Stone writes that he is often called upon to speak to community organizations. In the words of Nicholas Nassim Taleb he is "anti-fragile." He can handle customers coming and going, and he does not have a foundation of debt to be serviced. In fact, Stone is rather adamant on the subject of debt: don't use it.

There is a lot of value in the book even to somebody who does not want to implement Stone's model. I live on a third of an acre in Kyiv, Ukraine. We do not have much of the yuppie restaurant market here. You could never get seven dollars a pound for fresh spinach – one or two is more like it. However, the book will be useful to me in planning how to lay out our garden plots, how to use plastic tunnels to extend the growing season, how to control pests and weeds, and how to decide what to plant. I would recommend it to almost any gardener. Stone's bottom line perspective is useful even if you are only deciding what to grow for your own use.

Stone writes about the qualities one looks for in an employee "Paying for labor is worth it only if it allows you to do tasks that cannot be delegated as easily." He comes across as a fair boss, but not one who is in any way committed to socialist notions. Using an employee is a business decision. If they don't contribute to the bottom line, you don't need them.

An assessment of the capital that Stone himself brings to the business is illuminating. In terms of financial capital he is talking about $10,000, give or take. In terms of the human capital that he himself evidently brings, it includes yeoman farmer attributes that we would all like to impute to our ancestors, but we have to observe are rather rare today. Here is the human capital that Stone himself appears to possess:
• An innate sense of entrepreneurship. He looks for opportunities, and assesses each situation in terms of possible benefit.
• Hard work. Stone finds what he is doing interesting and is willing to put the time and to make it successful.
• Facility with tools. Like any farmer, Stone has to invent, construct, repair, and jury-rig equipment to get the job done.
• Gregariousness. Throughout Stone's day he comes in contact with many, many potential customers, and has the patience and the graciousness to talk with all of them.
• Fairness. He does what it takes to be fair to customers, employees, and all around him.
• Curiosity. Stone acquires the knowledge he shares in this book by talking to people, reading, and tinkering and figuring things out.
• Facility with numbers. Stone describes how he uses spreadsheets extensively to plan his operations and record his outcomes.
• Facility with language. He is in constant communication.
• Facility with computers and technology. This is essential to support work with numbers and language in today's world.

Stone's background prior to farming would not at first appear promising. He concluded after a decade and a half as a rock musician that that was not going to be his profession, so he looked for something he could do. He credits his father with an entrepreneurial streak that the son seems to have inherited. So, on the one hand, he started from nothing: no education in farming, no real experience, and precious little capital. On the other hand, in terms of human capital he was extremely well endowed. He had what it took to succeed.

Stone's story is a parable for Millennial youth. These kids emerge from the University chock-full of formal education but with no practical experience, and quite specifically, little notion of the fact that one earns a living by providing the kinds of goods and services that people are willing to pay for. What a blessing it would be to a 16-year-old with no discernible direction in life to get involved in something like urban farming and learn the self-discipline and the talents required to make a success of this fairly basic undertaking. It would prepare one for life. In our yeoman farmer ancestors, such an understanding of how things work was implicit. Stone provides a recipe for going back to these fundamental values.

It is a five-star effort all around. The table of contents below gives you an idea of the breadth and depth of the book.

I love listening to Curtis Stone speak and I think the book could be very useful for some. I personally was looking more for growing insight and methods which I didn't get much of. I've been gardening for years but still have so much to learn. Decent blue print just lacking in details in my opinion. Read it, but unless you are specifically looking to rent/borrow land in an urban setting I wouldn't make it my first read.

best book on urban farming
By Danielle
We recently built a hoop house and have future plans of selling produce. We aren't raking in the $ yet as we're just getting started with feeding our own family with our home grown goods, but if we ever decide to do sell produce, I can thank Curtis Stone for writing this book. He lays everything out and I mean EVERYTHING. Curtis isn't keeping any secrets to himself. He seems to be very concerned about food production or processing and wants everyone to grow their own food. He lays out all the steps and things to think about when selling produce. It's an educational and fantastic and easy read. He's also got YouTube videos you should check out. I love this guy. I made my husband and kids watch the videos and now one of our kids is interested in growing her own food to sell and got herself her own little greenhouse.

Competition Policy and Price Fixing, by Louis Kaplow

Throughout the world, the rule against price fixing is competition law's most important and least controversial prohibition. Yet there is far less consensus than meets the eye on what constitutes price fixing, and prevalent understandings conflict with the teachings of oligopoly theory that supposedly underlie modern competition policy.

Competition Policy and Price Fixing provides the needed analytical foundation. It offers a fresh, in-depth exploration of competition law's horizontal agreement requirement, presents a systematic analysis of how best to address the problem of coordinated oligopolistic price elevation, and compares the resulting direct approach to the orthodox prohibition.

In doing so, Louis Kaplow elaborates the relevant benefits and costs of potential solutions, investigates how coordinated price elevation is best detected in light of the error costs associated with different types of proof, and examines appropriate sanctions. Existing literature devotes remarkably little attention to these key subjects and instead concerns itself with limiting penalties to certain sorts of interfirm communications. Challenging conventional wisdom, Kaplow shows how this circumscribed view is less well grounded in the statutes, principles, and precedents of competition law than is a more direct, functional proscription. More important, by comparison to the communications-based prohibition, he explains how the direct approach targets situations that involve both greater social harm and less risk of chilling desirable behavior--and is also easier to apply.

We live in a world where beauty is everything. Society tells us that if we just looked a certain way, if we had the right products, if we were skinny enough, then we would be enough—we would have value. Society is wrong, but it took Katie H. Willcox years to understand this:

“Over the course of my 30 short years, I have both worked as a professional model and been the exact opposite of our culture’s beauty ideal. I have struggled with my weight and felt like I didn’t and never would fit in. Then I had a powerful realization: my misery and self-loathing didn’t change with my weight or how ‘pretty’ society thought I was, so my looks weren’t the source of happiness and worth that I had believed them to be. But then, what was? And how had I come to invest so much of myself in beliefs that were so untrue?”

In these pages, Katie shares the lessons she learned in her journey to find the answers to these questions. She reveals who gains from our feeling small and why we need to examine the messages we receive from our culture and our families. She explains how we can redefine beauty, make healthy the new “skinny,” and harness the power of our thoughts to choose self-love. Katie encourages us to discover our true magnificent selves, find our purpose, and pursue our dreams—and help others to do the same.

Important and groundbreaking financial strategy
Recognizing that traditional accounting and financial conventions may no longer provide the CFO with adequate armory to face the challenges of the electronic environment, eCFO takes a bold step forward to examine how modern CFOs must reposition themselves to operate effectively in this new era. Picking up where CFO: Architect of the Corporation's Future left off, this progressive new book provides new models and techniques to help corporations prosper in the twenty-first century. Featuring interviews at the start of each chapter from some of the world's leading CFOs-including Clayton Daly from Procter & Gamble, Tom Meredith from Dell Computers, and John Coombe from Glaxo Wellcome-eCFO draws on their experience to address the key issues they face in the new business environment.

Review
.."A guide to a topic no eCFO can afford to ignore..."
(Lloyd's List, 16 November 2001)

From the Inside Flap
"Finance will still exist in the future, but in a very different role... It will be a fascinating place to work because it will be... instrumental in creating whole new businesses..."--Stephen Hodge, Director of Finance, Royal Dutch/Shell Group

E-business is creating a powerful new finance role: the eCFO. Shaped by the huge impact of the Internet, the eCFO will act as an internal venture capitalist, opportunity seeker, and risk taker. Focused on the future, not the past, the eCFO will be a true strategic partner to the CEO -- anticipating industry trends, launching new enterprises, and managing investments as a portfolio of options.

Making the transition from CFO to eCFO promises to be exhilarating - and complex. It demands a host of new skills: Developing intangible assets. Valuing Internet businesses. Reinventing resource allocation. Building a "virtual" finance function. And more.

eCFO: Sustaining Value in the New Corporation - the sequel to CFO: Architect of the Corporation's Future - offers a practical, timely guide to mastering the enormous challenges facing today's corporate finance managers. Built around in-depth interviews with leading CFOs,case studies, best-practices, and independent research, eCFO is a road map to the future. In its pages, you'll find everything you need to add value and deliver results in today's e-business world.

From the Back Cover
Soon every business will be Internet enabled and we'll all start dropping the "e" in "e-business." Everything we do is being affected: product creation, customer fulfillment, logistics, planning and, of course, finance. - Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CFO, Nokia
Among CFOs, there's a universal belief that either you can embrace the Internet, or be victimized by it. This is prompting finance functions to examine how they will transform themselves over time. CFOs have to address the short, intermediate, and longer term impact of the Internet on their companies. - Tom Meredith, Managing Director, Dell Ventures and former CFO, Dell Computer Corporation
Undoubtedly e-commerce will have a significant impact on the finance function. Increasing shareholder value in this market means growing the value of your intangibles; at Pthat includes Rmarketing and people. - Clayton Daley, CFO, Procter and Gamble
The Internet will not wait - it's a cultural, not geographical, phenomenon. It requires substantial investment up front to gain scale fast. The opportunity will not last forever. We have to be represented in as many places, with as many products, as quickly as possible... We think our biggest challenge is one of execution in the face of insurmountable opportunity. - Warren Jenson, CFO, Amazon.com
CFOs of leading-edge companies in every industry are transforming themselves into eCFOs -- harnessing the power of the Internet to move beyond ERP, "blow up" their budget processes, apply new valuation techniques, and build new businesses. As traditional accounting functions change or disappear, redefining finance's agenda in an e-business world takes on a new urgency. Each chapter of eCFO: Sustaining Value in the New Corporation is introduced by a leading CFO. They, and the authors at PricewaterhouseCoopers, provide an invaluable guide to leveraging e-businees, offering strategies, tools, action plans and insight.

Is this a joke?
By A Customer
Having actually been a CFO, I was excited to learn how I might improve on how I do things, challenge any old thinking I had picked up, etc. However, this book says nothing new. In fact, it says almost nothing at all.
PwC has assembled a collection of jargon and case studies that are so high-level as to be of no use. I give it one star instead of zero because the eCFO checklists at the end of each chapter are, in fact, useful in terms of giving you some things to think about -- but you don't need to buy the whole book just for that. Check it out at the library -- better yet, just make photocopies of the checklists.
Is this book also an indication of what you get by hiring PwC consultants?

Great book!
By Marcelo Suarez Castillo
As its predecessor, CFO: The Architect of the Corporation's Future, eCFO continues PwC's collection of financial masterpieces.
eCFO provides a major turnaround in the finance function for the
21st century. The new CFO profile will demand a series of capabilities in order to lead companies through the e-world. Technical skills no longer suffice; CFOs are to be great visionaries and good communicators/motivators in their new leadership role.
For example, the new finance function has to take into account that budgets no longer work. They inhibit growth and creativity. I particularly liked a comment that said that budgets are an exercise of how small a company wants to be. Instead, the authors suggest using rolling forecasts as an alternative to foster creativity and at the same time control risks/costs.
I highly recommend this book. This is the third book I buy from PwC's finance team: CFO, eCFO and In Search of Shareholder Value.

Highly Recommended!
By Rolf Dobelli
The gang at PricewaterhouseCoopers discusses the chief financial officer's role in the changing corporate landscape. The eCFO is no longer only involved with financial management, but must become an internal venture capitalist, opportunity seeker and risk taker who works closely with the CEO to anticipate trends, recommend new enterprises and manage company investments as a portfolio of financial ventures. The authors draw on in-depth interviews with leading CFOs, case studies, independent research and analysis of the latest best practices. Though charts, bullets and boxes impart a textbook flavor, and the trend material is a little familiar, the book is generally solid and informative. We from getAbstract suggest it to CFOs and CEOs who need that "e" awareness, or to any manager who is trying to drag the boss into the 21st century, or even the 20th.

As a comic reader who loved Volume 1, Volume 2 does not disappoint
By JustAGeek
I have an interesting relationship with the Peculiar Children series. when I read the first novel it was because I had read its graphic novel adaptation first, due to it grabbing my attention as a comic book reader. After reading it I loved it so much that I had to read the source material as most novels that get the comic book treatment usually turn out so poor (especially ones of the young adult variety). After reading both I grew to love this series in general and wished to purchase the next entry in the series. When Hollow City came out I enjoyed it but was left wondering when the graphic novel version would be coming, while it took longer than I would have wanted its finally here. I'm happy to say that it lives up to the quality of the first graphic novel and just like its predecessor is a great comic in-itself and suitable adaptation of the novel as well. Based on Ransom Riggs novel, volume 2 of this series decides to leave the Big Fish meets X-Men like tone and story of the first volume and instead takes it in a new direction. This time (without spoiling too much) we're treated to a thriller/chase story across the desolate lands of the world during WWII and mostly involves our favorite characters from volume 1 surviving. It's a satisfying middle chapter and leaves you on the traditional cliffhanger. The art/comic translation from Cassandra Jean is fantastic feeling consistent with what we saw from volume 1 while being slightly more raw and harsh in order to fit the new setting and tone. The meshing of Riggs novels and Jean's art make for a truly great comic series, that can be enjoyed even without reading the novels. The only downside is the lack of a sneak peak for the next volume, which worries me on whether or not we will even get a graphic novel adaptation of volume 3. It would be an immense shame for them not to finish this trilogy of comics.

Displayed too small to read
By drallim
It displayed the words so small that I couldn't read it on my Android phone. I would have liked to continue reading the story, having read the first book, but I don't know why this one's graphics were so tiny. I'll have to get one in print.

Can't wait for the third installation!
By Lynne Tupas-Setser, Amazon Customer
We were excited to get this second installment of the graphic novel along with the 1st book in the trilogy. The artwork and photos work seamlessly together.

+++This is a New Adult Romance, intended for readers over 18. It contains scenes for mature readers.+++

Meghan Hawthorne is restless. The last year has been a roller coaster: her widowed mother just married a long-time family friend. Her younger brother unexpectedly became a father and a husband. Everyone's life is changing. . .except for hers. As she begins her final summer of college, Meghan's looking for excitement and maybe a little romance. Nothing serious; this girl just wants to have fun.

But the only man for Meghan turns out to be the last one she expects.

Sam Reynolds doesn't need excitement, and he doesn't want romance. Fun is out of the question. He's been the steady, responsible one since his parents were killed, and serious is his way of life.

When Sam rescues Meghan alongside a dark Georgia backroad, she falls hard for his deep brown eyes and slow drawl. But making him see her as more than just a party girl won't be easy. Sam's tempted by the fiery young artist, even as he realizes that giving into his feelings will mean radical change. . .maybe more than he can handle.

Nobody ever said love was simple.

From the Author
The One Trilogybegins with Sam and Meghan's story in The Last One. . .Nobody ever said love was simple.
It continues with Flynn and Ali's re-discovered love in The First One . . .Can first love last forever? And it concludes with Mason and Rilla's surprising romance in The Only One.Sometimes love isn't the easy choice. Sometimes it's the only one.Writing these books has been an amazing experience. For nearly a year, part of me has lived in the small Georgia town of Burton. I've loved watching this community: embracing their sorrows, celebrating their joys and exulting in their love stories.I hope you'll spend some time in Burton, too. One warning: you may not want to leave.

Her books run from YA paranormal romance (THE KING SERIES), through NA paranormal and contemporary romance (THE SERENDIPITY DUET, PERFECT DISH DUO, THE ONE TRILOGY) to adult contemporary and paramystery romance (CRYSTAL COVE BOOKS and RECIPE FOR DEATH SERIES). Loved this Book!
By Amanda
This book should come with a warning that you should have tissues and a fan handy! Meghan and Sam's story made me laugh, cry, and fan my face from all the heat between these two characterws.

Meghan is a sweet girl with a fiery passion. She takes her new summer job very seriously, and she takes getting to know Sam on a deeper level even more serious. I enjoyed Sam's stubbornness in the beginning. It was able to let us dig deeper into him as a character and really learn why he acted the way he did at times.

This book is written well, true to what we've come to expect from this author. I've read all of her books, and each time I pick a new favorite, she blows it out of the park by writing one that I love more!

I highly recommend The Last One. It's a great story that shows you that sometimes love comes along when you're least expecting it.

A combustible story that is both sweet and smoking hot!

The Last One by Tawdra Kandle
5 stars!

I couldn't put this down! Meghan's fiery temper and Sam's jaw clenching mask of self control make for a combustible story that is both sweet and smoking hot! I fell in love with all the characters easily, and enjoyed that this wasn't a simple love story where they meet, there is chemistry and they just go for it. Instead they struggled with their own inner dialogue and demons, and came out fighting anytime they couldn't trust their own instincts.
I could easily re-read this story!

This is a beautifully written story to two people finding true love!
By TSRBR
Overall Rating: 4.5 Rockin’ ★★★★☆

Life is constantly moving and changing and the one thing you can count on is that nothing stays the same. This is the story of two people that meet at a changing point in their lives. Decisions will be made to either face those changes head on or stay in that comfortable zone and remain stagnant allowing life to pass by unchallenged.

Sam had pulled over to help the stranded woman on the side of the deserted country road when he realized she was not alone and her friend was in no condition to help. From the moment Sam saw a passed out Meghan in the front seat of the broken down vehicle he was captured. He towed their car back to town, arranged for them to have it fixed and used a loaner to get them back home to Savannah. Sam thought that would be the last time he laid eyes on Meghan but fate had something else in mind. The second time he saw her was when she returned to get her car from the repair shop and once again sparks flew between them. He really didn’t have time for the feelings he felt for her and the way he couldn’t seem to stop thinking about her. Feeling like a total idiot for telling her she needed to be more responsible and not drink so much, he really thought that would be the last time he would ever see of her. But once again he was so wrong.

Meghan could not remember much about what had happened the night she went out with her friend to dance and have drinks. The only thing that she could remember was a pair of brown eyes that seemed to see right into her soul. When she meets the owner of those eyes she is pulled to him like no one she has ever met before and he lectures her about her night out! Thinking that they will never see each other again, Meghan is surprised when the program she has signed up for through the college for volunteers to teach art assigns her to the town where she had met Sam. When Meghan arrives at the home of the family that will hosting her for the summer she is amazed to find Sam is part of that family.

Will the two be able to withstand their need for one another? Can Sam put aside his preconceived ideas of Meghan? Read this novel and find out about Meghan and Sam’s journey to find their HEA!
