Reproducibility is the major drawback of this book.

This is a good book for practical user who want to use R to do survey analysis. It's brief and not difficult to understand if the user have some background from Lohr (1999)' s Sampling: Design and Analysis. However the major drawback of this text is its reproducibility. The author did have a website for this text, but no any R codes in the text are provided. Even the data sets provided on the website are not complete. To reproduce the outputs of R, you have to either type R code by yourself or copy from e-book. Even the codes in the text are not complete and many cannot be run directly. I have gone through four chapters and have to spend much time doing reverse engineering to get the same results shown in the text. Still many I couldn't reproduce. This book is supposed to be a practical guide to the user, but I have to say this book is more like a semi-finished product.

Non-technical approach to Survey Data Management

I am actually a bit disappointed with this book. It briefly covers the concepts of the survey data management and gives a good, succinct introduction to R however it fails to explain the logic and statistical introduction to its associated R code. I was expecting in depth explanation for the statistical procedures where there is an example R code. The book failed to fulfil my hunger for that aspect. Nonetheless it will be an important part of my library as the number of books in the field that provides R examples are very limited.

It's a book for R's Survey package users

It's a book for R's Survey package users: for analizing complex surveys on R software.

I missed the formulas. I like to know how a specific variance is calculated and I was expecting to find out - for example - the variance formula used for calibrated totals on Survey's "calibrate" command. The next edition could have an appendix on this subject...

But the package is really great and it is good to have a book on how to use it.

About the Author

Kurt Smith has been using Python in scientific computing ever since his college days, looking for any opportunity to incorporate it into his computational physics classes. He has contributed to the Cython project as part of the 2009 Google Summer of Code, implementing the initial version of typed memoryviews and native cython arrays. He uses Cython extensively in his consulting work at Enthought, training hundreds of scientists, engineers, and researchers in Python, NumPy, Cython, and parallel and high-performance computing.

Super Charge Python with Cython

This is an excellent book. The written style is clean and easy to understand. The author makes a good point about what Cython can and cannot do, and discusses the difference between CPU, memory, and I/O bound operations. There is a comprehensive treatment of Cython and how to optimize Python code that is CPU bound. I've used Cython on and off for several years, but this is by far the best book written about Cython to date.

Exceptionally written, helpful and concise - highly recommended!

With such a need for ways to improve the performance of a very popular programming language, this rare book on Cython feels long overdue. As someone who develops in Python, this might be the first great learning material on the compiler. Cython by Kurt W. Smith is thankfully well-written, and is a definite recommendation for anyone curious about speeding up Python. Of course, it helps to have some intermediate programming experience in both Python and C (and maybe even some C++, but I'll get to that later).

I will caution those who start to read the book and notice the immediate introduction of compiling Cython code (Chapter 2) even before going in-depth into syntax. Don't be discouraged, as this is actually a very clever organization by the author, whose comprehensible writing proves his knowledgeability in every topic here. Smith is starting off readers with a more conceptual, macroscopic look into how Cython code is ran - in multiple ways, as he explains in the chapter - so that way they're not constantly asking themselves that same question in the later chapters.

Which is to say, this book is meant to be read chronologically, and is not intended to be just a reference source on the subject. For that, you'll want to go to docs.cython.org or github.com/cython/cython/wiki. At roughly 220 pages of content, this book is incredibly dense for what it covers. It's definitely amazing how lean it is without being too overwhelming. Some key topics Smith covers includes organizing Cython code (Chapter 6), making a C library accessible to Python (Chapter 7), doing the same with C++ (Chapter 8), and using cProfile (Chapter 9). The entire text certainly comes off as a project that took years to pile all together.

As someone who's gone through the book page for page, I can assure others that there's at least something that even existing users of Cython are bound to learn. With that all said, my only gripe about Cython by Kurt Smith is what he doesn't cover: debugging and testing. I can understand the omissions for the reason of keeping it all concise, but it would've still been worthwhile to mention that Cython comes with a GDB extension called cygdb for when your project acts up. Still, these are ultimately minor complaints for what is easily the best learning resource on taking full advantage of Cython. Kudos to the computational plasma physicist himself, Kurt W. Smith.

Some other helpful notes:
-You should wait to install Cython before reading this book; Smith has helpful info on installing it for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows in Chapter 2.
-Some topics make use of IPython and using Python decorators, so get acquainted with both.
-Know what pointers are!
-Be mindful of using C++ with Cython when reading Chapter 9, as the pairing of the two is (as of this writing) still a work in progress, something that even the author acknowledges at the end of the chapter. This is worth mentioning because, to my knowledge, it's hard to know for sure that all of the newer features of C++11 and C++14 are stable with Cython.
-There's a 4-part YouTube tutorial called "Cython: Speed up Python and NumPy, Pythonize C, C++, and Fortran, SciPy2013 Tutorial", presented by Kurt W. Smith himself, and it covers a lot of the same material in the book. It's specifically located in the Enthought YouTube Channel (if you have trouble finding it, its logo looks just like the icon used for the Nintendo Gamecube). [UPDATE 9-10-15: It's come to my attention that Smith has another tutorial in the same channel but much newer; look up "Cython: Blend the Best of Python and C++ | SciPy 2015 Tutorial | Kurt Smith". As a heads up, the tutorial is 3 hours and 45 minutes long.]

Great Writing About A Facinating Technology

I purchased this book without much prior knowledge of Cython, but was interested in learning how to create performant Python code. This book did a great job of explaining why Cython is the go to choice for speeding up Python.

Cython allows you to speed up Python code by translating it to C (or C++), and it also allows you to create wrappers for C code to be called in Python.

The book assumes you know Python and C somewhat well. It is a niche book for experienced users. The author took a bold step in assuming the reader will be up to speed, and I appreciated that.

Chapter three did a great job explaining how Python and C are fundamentally different languages, but also how they are complementary. Cython acts an interface between the two languages allowing you to pick and choose where you want C level performance, or where you want ease of use functionality of Python.

The writing is excellent and the author assumes you are familiar with modern software techniques.

I will leave it to the author to explain it best with the last sentence from the book: "With this one multifaceted tool [Cython] in hand, we can confidently bring Python's dynamism to C and C++, and bring the performance of C and C++ to Python".

I thought that getting the spiral bound edition would be an awesome decision. I loved the idea of the tabs and the fact that it would lay open more nicely, but now I'm going to have to spend MORE money and get a different copy of this book. Since it says it's the second edition, it seemed logical that, aside from the binding, it would be identical to other second editions. This is not the case. It is not laid out similarly at all. After searching through it, in an attempt to keep up with my class discussions, I learned that it doesn't even contain the same content. It is utterly useless. Such a mistake.

Excellent

I normally don't like to keep English textbooks but this one I will be saving. I reference to it for examples incase I forget what to do within my essay. It has a guide for MLA and a short section on APA. It isn't giant like my previous textbooks in the past. Its only the size of about a 500 page hardback reading book.

Way too short..

potentially a great story but way too short. by the time Slayer and Nadia work out their issues I will have spent $7.00! not gonna happen, so tired of authors doing this. :(

Good story idea but not developed

The author has an intriguing story idea here but what I did not enjoy was that it is rushed. I did not realize at the time I bought the book it was only 70 pages and it is a cliffhanger. Therefore the couple is thrown together and I did not find myself really connecting or feeling the chemistry between them. I liked her when she stood up to him on the roof and walked away, but then 10 minutes later she comes back and basically throws herself at him.. It sorta contradicted what she told him on the roof... Then Mr. Badass "Slayer" biker tries to take her in the bathroom and then allows her to dress and walk away without completing... (that felt weird on my side)... He says no other woman has made him work so hard for it... I didn't see him work hard for it..

Again, great story line but I believe the author should develop the story and characters more

Scholastic set is better

Scholastics "I can learn to read" is better. I have many early reading resources. We have the bob books all the way up to set 4. Teach your child to read in 100 lessons, we have the leapfrog letter factory, and misc. leveled readers like big egg. The best is the scholastic combined with the leapfrog videos. My 3 year old knows all the letters of the alphabet and all their sounds from the leapfrog videos. Now she is ready to start reading. The Bob books seemed good, but in retrospect and in comparison to scholastic they were too boring/ too hard. It turns out there are more skills to reading than simple phonics. There is using context cues, using the pictures, the child using their knowledge of grammar to guess the next word, in addition to phonics. The Bob books only use phonics, but the scholastic books use all the cues such that my 3 year old is actually reading. So now each night I tell them "I read a book, you read a book". And both my 3 year old and 5 year old are involved in that.

The Best Thing for my Four Year Old!

Bob Books! Who knew? My young daughter LOVES these books. She is 4 years old and came to me one day saying "I want to learn how to read by myself! My friends can read and I want to learn how to read." I remembered hearing other mothers refer to "Bob Books" long ago so I looked them up and purchased. WoW! My daughter thinks she is such an accomplished human being now, when she reads how "Mat sat." LOL.. I love it. It has been an amazing experience for my little one and her confidence. I'm so happy I bought this set and I will purchase more.

Perfect Addition to 100 Easy Lessons!

My son was a reluctant reader last year. It was our first year homeschooling and we were having a hard time finding a program that worked well for us. We started BOB Books this month when we started out new school year. We use Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons. I love the DIASTAR approach to reading. BOB Books go along nicely with 100 Easy Lessons. My son loves doing a few lessons and then being able to read a new book. I highly recommend BOB Books to anyone teaching their child to read even if they are using a different program as their primary.
