About the Author
Don Ahrens is Professor Emeritus at Modesto Junior College in Modesto, California. The bestselling author of two Cengage Learning texts, Professor Ahrens received the Textbook and Academic Authors Association's McGuffey Longevity Award for the 9th Edition of his market-leading METEOROLOGY TODAY. He has influenced countless professionals in the field of atmospheric science as well as hundreds of thousands of students who use his books to better understand weather and climate. A difficult read - but it does the job.

This book read like a 5000 level meteorology course. I rented the online version of this book for an online class and it was completely painful. I'm not sure if this is actually an intro level meteorology book or if this is for advanced studies so I don't want to be too hard on the book. But I didn't like the way this book read at all. I found myself having to read things over and over to feel like I was getting a good understanding what was going on.

Didn't have access code

The cheapest way to go about this would to be just to buy the access code since it comes with the book in computer form. Bought this book really expensively thinking it came with the access code but it didn't. I ended up way overpaying for everything.

Scholarly, but still extremely readable. Excellent!

Don't be daunted by its 500-page length. TTT is extremely wellresearched and scholarly, but also eminently readable. The first twochapters, on Tradition and the effect of extreme higher critics,should be manditory reading for all Catholics, even those not interested in eschatology. The remainder of the book is an excellent antidote to end-times hysteria; it restricts itself to approved prophecies only, and beautifully explains what Catholic teaching really is on the subject. My only complaint is that there are quite a few editing glitches; that's easily overlooked, however, in light of the overall high quality of this work.

A monumental achievement!

This scholarly book may not appeal to those who want to see sensationalism, but for the reader who wants to read the definitive book on Catholic end-times belief, this is it. Desmond Birch backs up his every conclusion with sound theology. Clearly he has spent a lifetime studying not only scripture, but many obsure Church documents from the early Church. He makes one of the best arguments I've seen for the teaching authority of the Church, which he presented simply as background to understanding the role of Mary in the early Church and today. He is neither gullible nor superstitious, and is unabashedly aligned with Rome--only Church approved apparitions are covered. One of the asides in the book was tremendously meaningful to me personally: Birch pointed out how just about every heresy in history was directly related to a lack of devotion to Mary on the part of the founder of the heresy. After laying all the bricks for a better understanding of apparitions, he discusses in great depth the content and implications of the messages. Everything is summarized very neatly at the end of the book, in case your head is spinning by that time! I couldn't recommend TT&T more enthusiastically. It is a phenomenal study of end times.

Excellent book. I wish I could have an updated version.

This book is excellent and I agree strongly with all the previous positive comments on it. I read this book right after the year 2000. As someone else has posted, I wish the author could update the book (published in 1996) because there is, in my opinion, a bit too much discussion on "year 2000 end-times issues" that now are of less interest (because it is obvious that the catastrophists were wrong). The book could also be enhanced with more analysis of approved prophecies that received few treatment (dreams of Dom Bosco, La Sallete and Fatima, por example). All in all, this is probably the best place to go, if you want to understand the truth on eschatology.

Great general reference for history of math (physical science emphasis)

I bought the book to improve my knowledge of the history of mathematics. I'm a High School math teacher, although I never took a history of math course (lots of history which I generally enjoy). Although a significant portion of the math is beyond the High School curriculum, with the density of over 750 pages there are plenty of anecdotes that can be incorporated and interesting to share.

A dense book which covers numerous topics. I've successfully used parts of the book as a personal reference when studying other topics in detail in other books. Referencing this history's summaries on occasion has helped me see the forest through the trees, so to speak. Sometimes this book's summaries of a topic help place a field of mathematics (or a problem within mathematics) in the right context. That said, despite the smallish print and length of the text, the coverage is so wide it's not really going to teach topics in depth as some sort of replacement textbook.

Like any good history, there are many fascinating personalities or shall I say "characters" present in the history of math. Pettiness can be found in any field and some of the mathematician's stories and personal conflicts can be pretty silly in retrospect.

Final observation - while of course one does not need to be a physicist or mathematician to enjoy large parts of the book, one should at least have some calculus. For those looking for a more basic history of the development of algebra and geometry only, look elsewhere. As others noted there's a strong emphasis with physical science mathematics here which can be either fascinating or overwhelming.

This magnificent work covers mathematics from its recorded beginnings to the end of World War I. It provides remarkable insight into the development of the various branches of mathematics, and into the connections between mathematical and scientific ideas. Readers will find a wealth of interesting and useful information, including a superb
bibliography. Highly recommended!

An up-to-date, bring-your-own-math history of mathematics

In his introduction, Grattan-Guinness makes several good points about what a history of mathematics should contain. In particular he emphasises "the importance of applications to the physical world", setting his book apart from many other histories that follow the "unfortunate attitude" of "snobbery with regard to pure as opposed to applied mathematics". Partly but not entirely as a result of this approach, Grattan-Guinness covers an enormous amount of material. You are likely to find one or two pages of nontechnical, to-the-point discussion on almost any topic you can think of. This is of course valuable, but it also means that nothing is explained in detail and the book is too fragmented to be very enjoyable as a narrative. As a reference, it complements a history such as Kline's Mathematical Thought in that Grattan-Guinness doesn't bother giving detailed references to very many original works, but instead is strong on modern scholarly interpretations of history and provides lots of references to historical research.

My first thought after finishing this book was, what might happen if I "accidentally" left this book open on my computer. The story is well done, very erotic, without being smutty. The characters are believable and it is something you can share with your partner without being thrown out of the house. You never know, but the results could be exciting for all.

ASCE 7-05 is an integral part of the building codes of the United States. The earthquake load provisions in ASCE 7-05 are substantially adopted by reference in the 2006 International Building Code and the 2006 NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code. Numerous other provisions of all other ASCE 7-05 sections are also adopted by reference by both model building codes including the provisions for calculating wind loads and snow loads. Structural engineers, architects, and those engaged in preparing and administering local building codes will find the structural load requirements essential to their practice.

need it for the CA PE exam

i bought this for the California seismic PE exam. it's about what you'd expect. i did find some of the stuff helpful as a person unfamiliar with seismic theory. this (or whatever version is now out and recommended by the State of CA) is VITAL to bring with you to the exam, and you should have it while you study. otherwise it's useless unless you actually need this info for your daily job.
